Understanding Your Role- Explaining the Intake Process and Services at Our Community-Based Agency
How would you explain your role and the intake process to Terrance?
At the beginning of the intake process, I would meet Terrence on a one-on-one basis and introduce myself to him, ask him to introduce himself to me, and discuss with him what the purpose of the meeting would be. I would make the client aware that he is an active and collaborative participant during the process. It is also recommended that a discussion of the ethical and policy factors be made and that feedback should be sought from the client to clarify the proposed role or purpose and any other questions that he might have (Cournoyer, 2016).
What specific questions would you want to ask Terrance to confirm his understanding of the intake process?
To confirm Terrence’s understanding of the intake process, I would ask him about why he has chosen to seek assistance from the agency, the circumstances that led him to seek assistance, what he expects from the agency, and how he can be involved in ensuring the success of the process. I would also encourage him to ask any questions that he might have.
What information about confidentiality would you want to disclose to Terrance?
I would like Terrence to know that I am bound by confidentiality and that any information that is disclosed during my professional service will not be disclosed to any other person except when there are compelling professional reasons. I would also let him know under what circumstances confidentiality will have to be breached and obtain his informed consent before proceeding, and negotiation of ground rules also needs to be done (McWhinney, Haskins-Herkenham & Hare, n.d; Krase, 2014).
Cultural considerations
Trust issues are normally common among African Americans, particularly when dealing with various agencies. It would be important to strike a close relationship with the client to ensure trust and that he understands that the agency will work to ensure his best interest is in helping him with the housing and employment struggles that he is undergoing.
