Surgical site infections are a burden for the healthcare delivery industry. SSIs are preventable, and many interventions have been proposed over the past years to prevent them. De Simone et al. (2021) conducted a literature search for publications on SSIs. The study results revealed that antibacterial sutures and wound protectors have an effective role in preventing SSIs in intra-abdominal infections. Furthermore, applying negative pressure wound therapy in the prevention of SSIs can help reduce postoperative wound complications. It is important to track normothermia with the available hospital resources in the intraoperative period to reduce SSI rates (De Simone et al., 2021). The article further noted that optimum knowledge of antibiotics’ pharmacodynamics and pharmacological properties could help surgeons and physicians determine when more intraoperative antibiotic doses should be given to patients undergoing intraabdominal infections to prevent SSIs.

The term SSI has been used extensively in this article. This article has described how SSIs affect patients and the various medical strategies that can be implemented to reduce SSIs in patients undergoing intraabdominal surgeries.  The individuals impacted by the content presented in the articles are patients, surgeons, and nurses. Patients are adversely affected by SSIs since they result in complications after surgery, increasing hospitalization length, healthcare costs, post-surgery complications, and death. Surgeons are affected by this content since it proposes strategies that they can implement to reduce or prevent surgical site infections (SSIs).

The stakeholders that can help deal with surgical site infections are hospitals, healthcare educators, and government organizations like the CDC. Hospitals can use this content to develop hospital guidelines to help reduce surgical site infections. Healthcare educators can introduce this content in the curriculum to educate healthcare students on preventing SSIs. Government agencies such as the CDC can use this content to implement guidelines to help hospitals and healthcare professionals prevent SSIs.
