Common Grievance Procedure Issues

Work now, grieve later

This grievance procedure is significant because it dictates a sort of order in the workforce. I agree with this grievance procedure because it enables continuous production. The policy allows an employee to avoid penalties that may arise from insubordination (The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, 2019). It still provides an opportunity to highlight issues that they believed violated the contract. The process of raising grievances after the work is done allows clients to continue enjoying the services and products (SHRM, 2021). For instance, if an assistant chef is asked to conduct a task that is not included in their job description and violates the working contract, it is wise to complete the job and allow the clients to have their meals comfortably. After the shift, the assistant chef can raise their issue with the executive chef for resolution. However, this rule demands emotional maturity and restraint (Pastoor, 2018).

Contract language prevails

I agree with the grievance procedure because adhering to it gives one party the likelihood or tendency to go against the contract’s terms. For instance, if an employee insisted on 40 40-minute lunch break instead of the 20 minutes that is stated in the contract, this would affect the working hours. The company is likely to lose more time through lunch breaks, which would have a negative effect on the productivity of the company’s workforce (Golden, 2012). It also creates inconsistency among employees because some would adhere to the rules while others do not. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate the window that allows employees to act on common behaviors and stick to the contract’s language. In addition, if employees were asked to give up one of their vacation days for work, they would form resistance. Therefore, this procedure buffers both parties from situations that can easily escalate into challenging work issues.
