Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil
The phrase “Tree of the knowledge of good and evil” stands out to me. The Tree of Knowledge is a metaphor representing good and evil in human life (Pugh, 2018). Its main purpose was to provide man with two choices: either to love God and serve him without being forced to or to go against him and become rebellious. Some of the interpretations of the Tree of Knowledge include but are not limited to sexual knowledge. Sexual desires began immediately after the first man and woman ate from this tree (Pugh, 2018). A Jewish analyst projected this view noting that they became aware of their nakedness after eating from the tree and became ashamed of themselves. That is why they covered their nakedness after eating the fruit. The second interpretation is awareness; before eating from the Tree of Life, Adam and Eve lived without understanding some of the things happening around them, especially their nakedness. Consuming the tree’s fruit gave them knowledge of everything. That is why Adam was quick to hide from God as he realized that he was naked. The third interpretation is a moral judgment, where a man was given the ability to value moral circumstances and choose between good and evil (Pugh, 2018). This can be proven when God appeared to Solomon in a dream, asking him what he, as a king, wanted to be given, and Solomon requested the ability to differentiate between good and evil.
Even though the Tree of Knowledge brought awareness to man about good and evil, it was not evil by its nature (Johansen & Jones 2014). It was a platform that provided man with choices to make, and a man decided to choose sin instead. God’s command was as simple as man must not eat from a particular tree. This phrase stood out to me as it delves into the origin of sin in the world.
