Treatment – The Case of Mr. Forrester
The case of Mr. Forrester creates a complicated scenario that would require a lot of cultural awareness and sensitivity during conversations. Therefore, engaging with Mr. Forrester in a conversation about the importance of his treatment with regard to his approach to disciplining his son, Timmy, will first have to focus on understanding his past experiences with similar treatment. Culture and ethnicity are key determinants of a parent’s practices regarding disciplining a child (Silveira et al., 2021). Therefore, revisiting his past experiences will help him understand his views on such a discipline strategy and, at the same time, appreciate his past experiences, which have shaped his views on disciplining a child. Another approach at this level will also include actively listening to him to best understand his perspectives.
Noting that he has had a past encounter with social services, he supposedly has some trust issues with anyone who tries to talk to him. An attempt to understand his views on disciplining a child and his past experiences with his own parents will, therefore, help bring some trust during the interaction.
Another strategy in establishing trust would be to help Mike reflect on his experiences with his parents. Such a reflection can help him realize that he is hurting his son and that he needs treatment for any trauma he may have grown up with due to his parents beating him. It will also include the use of evidence that shows that most violent parenting behaviors result from unaddressed intergenerational trauma sustained by parents (Lünnemann et al., 2019). The conversation will also include comparing his son’s behaviors to his past behaviors as a result of experiencing violent parenting. Finally, the conversation would include asking questions about any possible constraints that may be holding him back from continuing with treatment and providing him with information on possible resources he may have access to support his treatment.
