Treatment Planning and Considerations when Working with Clients

Treatment Planning and Considerations when Working with Clients

My first experience in preparing a treatment plan was rather stressful, but I was able to learn a lot from it. The client suffered from alcohol use disorder and was unemployed. He did not acknowledge that he had a problem and needed help. He was brought in by his daughter and protested meeting with me. The client was highly uncooperative and failed to offer any input on the treatment plan. With the help of my supervisor, we were able to help him see a problem with his drinking problem and make steps to identify the desired outcome. Various local referrals and group supports were made. The client agreed to follow through with the plan and has made significant progress since starting the treatment.

When developing a treatment plan, it is important to consider setting measurable objectives and goals for the treatment plan (Slayter, 2020). The client needs to take part in setting and understanding the purpose of the treatment. The set objectives need to be related to the mental health needs of the client. They should also be measurable and easy for the client to understand.

With regard to the stages of change, it is important to consider that change is a cyclical continuum and not a linear process (Zuluaga, 2017). This will help one to meet the client where they are in relation to their preparedness for change. This will make it possible for one to come up with proper interventions that match the exact stage in which the client is, focusing on their strengths, empowering them, and enabling the client to exercise their autonomy by making positive changes at a pace that they are comfortable with. It will also help one to avoid feeling accountable for the successes and failures made by the client.
