Theory of Reasoned Action
Reasoned action theory is a translation framework relevant to my practice problem. The theory is an extension of the theory of planned action. The framework attempts to understand the behavior of human beings in various contexts. The theory can be utilized to help in predicting and enplaning many health behaviors (Xiao, 2020). The intention of a human being to engage in behavior can be used in predicting whether they will engage in the behavior. Subjective norms and attitudes determine intentions. The more individuals perceive a behavior as essential to society, family, and friends, the more likely they will develop intentions to engage in a behavior. Various external factors can limit the ability of individuals to attain and control their behavior. The theory proposes that a person’s behavior can be predicted when one knows their subjective norms, perceived behavior control, and attitude.
Icek Ajzen and Martin Fishbein formulated the theory of reasoned action when they were trying to establish the differences between behavior and attitude. These pioneers first elaborated on the impact of behavioral intention. They acknowledged that various factors could reduce the impact of attitude on behavior (Lacaille, 2020). For example, a healthcare practitioner may wish to engage in proper handwashing protocols, but a lack of resources such as soap may change their attitude. Therefore, the theory rotates around predicting behavioral intentions and predicting behavior due to the separation of behavior from behavioral intentions. The other element of the theory is attitude and individual expectations. When our attitude wants us to do certain things, the expectations of others may make us do something different. For example, a nurse may think that it is not appropriate to use hand sanitizers, but the other staff may regard it as inappropriate.
Applicability and Application to The Practice Problem
The theory is appropriate for implementing a quality improvement project to prevent the spread of nosocomial infections through handwashing with soap and running water and using personal protective equipment. The theory can be used to improve compliance with handwashing guidelines and promote the use of personal protective equipment. An educational intervention will need to be planned to educate the staff members on the significance of the infection prevention guidelines. Project implementers can use questionnaires to obtain data concerning healthcare practitioners’ knowledge of the guidelines.
The various concepts, such as perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, attitude, and behavioral intention, need to be established and modified. In behavioral intention, project implementers need to establish the likelihood of healthcare professionals engaging in handwashing protocols and using personal protective equipment. This can be used in establishing strategies to address the concerns that may reduce the likelihood of engaging in the behavior. In terms of attitude, the behavior of the nurses should be evaluated (Lacaille, 2020). One can establish whether they perceive the behavior as good or bad. If they perceive it as bad, strategies need to establish the reasons. This can then be incorporated into the educational sessions. In subjective norms, managers can establish how others in society view their behavior. Patients can be asked to provide insight into how they perceive the behavior. The patients and other people in society will likely approve of handwashing and personal protective equipment. When everyone around the nurse approves of the behavior, nurses are likely to adopt it into their daily activities (Rossman, 2021). Finally, in perceived behavioral control, managers can question individuals if they believe they can successfully engage in the behavior. If they can not, one should establish the reasons. Therefore, the theory of reasoned action can be used in implementing the quality Improvement project. It can be used to modify the attitude and behavior intention. It can be used to promote compliance.
