Promoting Equal Opportunity and Improving the Quality of Life

UNICEF’s initiatives promote equal opportunity for children. To begin with, it creates an inclusive environment that discourages discrimination against disabled people. It prohibits discrimination against children with physical, communication, and attitudinal barriers (UNICEF, n.d.-b). Also, UNICEF prohibits discrimination against ethnic minorities, females, members of the LGBTQ community, and immigrants (UNICEF, n.d.-b). Regarding females, UNICEF seeks to ensure that girls and women fulfill their potential.

UNICEF’s initiatives that improve the quality of life include emergency and humanitarian activities, immunization programs, nutrition programs, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, and efforts to treat HIV/AIDS and minimize transmission of the disease to children. The immunization program seeks to ensure that every child receives the recommended vaccination (UNICEF, n.d.-b). The wash program seeks to improve sanitation and limit the spread or outbreak of communicable diseases. The nutrition program seeks to provide adequate nutrition for every child to improve their survival and promote their growth and development (UNICEF, n.d.-b). Humanitarian activities target conflicting war-tone countries and those that experience disasters.

Several barriers impede UNICEF’s attempts to accomplish quality care and equitable opportunity. Firstly, cultural practices, for example, lobbying for child marriages or forced marriages, limit girls’ ability to reach their full potential. Furthermore, cultural practices such as female genital mutilation result in deformities, mental torture, and increased mortality rates (Clark et al., 2020). Secondly, physical challenges to quality treatment include a lack of facilities for the physically disabled population and insufficient mobility for persons living in remote places (Clark et al., 2020). Thirdly, children from families or countries with poor socioeconomic status will have restricted access to quality care (Clark et al., 2020). Lastly, the absence of robust social support systems reduces the healthcare quality provided to children.

Impact of Funding Sources, Policy, and Legislation

UNICEF depends on voluntary contributions from the public sector, private sector, and people. The public sector is the biggest financier for UNICEF. This consists of intergovernmental organizations, governments, and global partnerships. The USA is the biggest government contributor, followed by Germany and the European Union (UNICEF, n.d.-c). The top three private contributors include the USA, Japan, and Germany, respectively (UNICEF, n.d.-c). Data from 2021 indicates that the public sector accounted for about 72.9 percent of the total annual contributions, whereas the private sector accounted for about 27.1 percent (UNICEF, n.d.-c).

Policies and legislation that induce the public sector to withdraw from UNICEF will impair its normal operations. This is attributed to the fact that the public sector is the biggest contributor to UNICEF. Funding decisions have an impact on the delivery of services. UNICEF’s programs will be hampered by policies that decrease or abolish public sponsors (UNICEF, n.d.-c). As a result, children’s access to care, healthy nutrition, education, humanitarian aid, and WASH will be limited. This will paralyze UNICEF’s programs and limit its ability to avail timely quality care to children and their families. In contrast, the addition of additional public sponsors will strengthen UNICEF’s operations.

Impacts on the Health and Safety Needs of a Local Community

UNICEF works to improve the safety and health of children. As previously stated, it provides prompt and high-quality care treatments to all children during emergencies (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). This is accomplished via programs such as emergency and humanitarian activities, immunization programs, nutrition programs, education, and innovative programs. Emergency and humanitarian activities are relevant during conflict and disasters (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). UNICEF is also committed to child survival and seeks to reduce child mortality rates worldwide. This is performed through programs such as immunization, good nutrition, and WASH (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). Moreover, UNICEF seeks to provide all children with safety and inclusion. To fulfill this goal, UNICEF campaigns for the preservation of children’s rights, gender equality, and nondiscriminatory approaches toward disabled children (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a).

Nurses’ roles are relevant to UNICEF’S programs. For instance, nurses offer emergency care and long-term care. This role will allow them to access children and families at risk of humanitarian crises to give timely care. In addition, nurses are vital stakeholders involved in patient and family education. This role will allow them to teach children and their families about WASH. It will also allow them to champion the rights of children and the need to offer culturally congruent services.
