The Scope of Practice for DNP-Prepared Nurses

Several key factors have significantly influenced the scope of practice for DNP-prepared nurses in recent years. In a social context, there are higher incidences of an ageing population and chronic diseases, which have, in turn, set the expectation for nurses to provide integrated care and plan care coordination. The economic aspect of uncertain healthcare costs and the need to be more efficient constitutes expanded duties for DNPs in prevention, chronic illness management, and the leadership of interprofessional teams. Professionally, the Affordable Care Act and other legislation have necessitated the insertion of DNP nurses into positions formerly vested in physicians like hospital administration, health policy formulation, and medical care delivery areas (Wood, 2019). Hospitals these days emphasize the competence of individuals with DNP degrees in delivering effective clinical care decisions, and cost approaches have taken part in this trend.

To grow awareness of the changing DNP role, the DNP practitioners themselves must articulate and present their value proposition in a bid to show that they are indeed deserving of more responsibilities. Demonstrating improved patient outcomes, satisfaction, and care coordination can build buy-in from other providers and administrators. Having this dynamic involving DNPs in the decision-making process at all levels of the organization is important.

Educational outreach is also crucial—penetrating nursing and medical schools in order to highlight the competencies of the DNP; lecturing at grand rounds and publishing research that seeks to highlight DNP success can strengthen the DNP role(Graves et al., 2021; Portela Dos Santos et al., 2022). A clinical placement opportunity that gets DNP students working alongside physicians and nurses will go a long way in instilling a deep understanding of interprofessional from the earliest stage of their training. Conclusively, as DNP-credentialed nurses are proven to be, time and again, more engaged in the improvement of care quality and cutting down on costs, the variation of their scope of practice will adapt to the novel healthcare system requirements and the population’s needs.
