The Role of Self as Designer, Teacher, and Steward

The Role of Self as Designer, Teacher, and Steward

According to Senge (2006), leaders in learning organizations are stewards, teachers and designers. Senge (2006) further suggests that a designer in the leadership context redesigns something already existing, such as the organization’s processes, formal roles and metrics. Conversely, being a steward in the leadership context includes guiding others to achieve a mission and acting as a teacher to recognize the critical capabilities lacking in the organization. My actions in life and work have involved being a designer, teacher, and steward to promote career and personal growth. For instance, I exemplify stewardship by using transformational leadership.

Transformational leadership includes considering people individually, offering idealized influence and inspirational motivation and stimulating people intellectually (Khan et al., 2020). Stewardship is essential in transformational leadership because it enables the leader to motivate followers by encouraging them to set their own goals (Barbazzeni, 2023). I portray stewardship by inspiring my colleagues to leverage the opportunities in the organization. For example, I share my story of how I have advanced from junior positions to top positions with my colleagues to inspire and motivate them to work hard to get promoted and develop their careers. Further, I exemplify design and teaching by participating in teamwork projects in my organization to introduce and implement changes that promote organizational growth. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I helped my organization redesign operations to accommodate online working arrangements. I also taught some of my colleagues how to use online interaction programs such as Zoom to facilitate communication and collaboration when handling tasks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although my actions have played a vital role in improving my leadership capability as a teacher, designer and steward, I need to add some actions to improve myself. For instance, I should increase my observation power to improve myself as a designer. I should also improve my problem-solving approach to become a better steward and take a short course on effective communication to improve my communication skills to become a good teacher.

The Role of Self as Designer, Teacher, and Steward

Using Senge’s criteria of designer, teacher, and steward, evaluate your actions in life or at work in each of these areas. Discuss at least one way you exemplify this role and provide a specific example. Then, discuss one action you could add for each of these roles to improve yourself.
In response to your peers, discuss what actions your classmates shared that you believe would be effective and explain why. In addition, you can provide an additional action (not discussed) for each of the three roles – designers, teachers, and stewards – in order to assist your peers.
