The Role of MSN Essential Concepts and NONPF Competencies in Advanced Practice Nursing

Responding to Linda

Hello Linda,

This is a good post. You have well and clearly responded to each question. Both MSN essential concepts and the NONPF competencies are essential in the preparation of advanced practice nurses for advanced-level practice settings. Both MSN essential concepts and NONPF competencies prepare nurses at their master’s level of education in both technical and non-technical competencies, including developing evidence to guide their practice, integrating technology in practice, leadership, policy formulation and advocacy, and communication. These concepts and competencies also ensure that advanced practice nurses understand and adhere to the ethical principles, professional codes, and standards specific to the various advanced practice nurse specialties and roles (DeNisco, 2021). These competencies and concepts are also important to master as a PMHNP student during the 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours as well as during practice as a certified PMHNP.

Agreeably, the nurse practitioner role is associated with improved quality and safety of care patients receive in primary and acute care settings. The competency-based approach toward nurse practitioner education equips the NP with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes through the educational process, which helps them to efficiently transition from the learning environment to the practice environment (Hodges et al., 2019). This means that based on the MSN concepts and NONPF competencies, the nurses are equipped with advanced skills necessary for the provision of high-quality and safe care, including using research and evidence to guide practice and make decisions, conduct advanced health assessments and diagnoses, and relate with their patients in a way that is personal, ethical, and professional. This means care with fewer errors and more focus on the patient’s well-being as the ultimate goal of delivering the care.

Responding to TaQuina

Hello TaQuina,

I appreciate how you have presented your discussion post with simple, direct points. As you have noted, the eight MSN essentials concepts and the nine NONPF core competencies are both necessary components of nurse practitioner education and for the clarification of the NP role. To add to the post, the MSN concepts and the NONPF competencies ensure that the NP, upon graduation and certification, can critically analyze data and evidence, integrate such evidence into their nursing practice, continuously improve the quality and safety of care, and utilize technology to improve the efficiency of care delivery (DeNisco, 2021). Such concepts and competencies also equip the NP with skills and knowledge to understand the workings of the health systems, understand the needs of the various components of the health system, utilize their skills to develop sustainable evidence-based solutions to such needs and lead the health system through essential changes that improve the health system.

The MSN essential concepts and NONPF competencies also equip NPs with the skillsets to independently deliver care to patients. Notably, independent practice means “without the need to work at a Coloradoite capacity or under the supervision of a physician.” NP autonomy in diagnosing, treating, and prescribing medications in practice has significant impacts on healthcare delivery outcomes, including better access to care, improved care utilization, better care quality and safety, reduced cost of care, and better healthcare workforce outcomes (Yang et al., 2020). Having more PMHNPs can improve the supply of mental health specialists with the capacity to practice autonomously in a time when the United States is experiencing a mental health crisis. The core quality competency is actually a good NONPF competency to focus on as it is the basics of efficient healthcare delivery and improves care outcomes and patient experiences.

The Role of MSN Essential Concepts

The Role of MSN Essential Concepts

Please provide a brief (at least 250 words) peer response for each discussion post provided below.

Linda

Identify each of the eight MSN essential concepts

There are eight MSN essential concepts. They are clinical judgment, communication, compassionate care, diversity, equity, and inclusion, ethics, evidence-based practice, health policy, and social determinants of health (DeNisco,2021).

Identify each of the nine NONPF core competencies.

There are also nine NONPF core competencies. There are also nine core competencies of the NONPF (National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculties). They are the scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice (DeNisco, 2021).

Assess the role of clinical education for the nurse practitioner student.  How many hours are required for a PMHNP student?

Clinical education is one of the most exciting parts of the nurse practitioner student’s journey.

This experience prepares the student for being a provider in the clinical setting. According to the ANA (American Nurses Association), 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours are required to take the certification exam.

Identify how quality and safety relate to the role of a nurse practitioner.

Quality and safety are imperative to the role of the nurse practitioner. Regarding quality, the provider needs to be aware of the continuous need to improve processes that impact patient care, such as prompt delivery of care.  Also, effective communication has been noted to improve the quality of care(Sharkiya,2023).

From a safety standpoint, the provider needs to make sure errors are reported promptly when they occur, also the nurse practitioner must be vigilant in making sure patient safety is always a top priority.

Choose one core competency and explain ways in which you will effectively integrate this competency into your practice as an advanced practice nurse.

The core competency I selected is leadership. As a leader already in my current job setting, I plan to integrate my leadership skills into my new role as a PMHNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner).

The same qualities that I display as a leader, such as honesty, confidentiality, trust, and empathy, will benefit me when working in my new role. All nurses should possess leadership skills, and I will display my leadership abilities and utilize my current team approach in hopes of building great relationships with my patients and co-workers.

The eight MSN essentials concepts include:

  • Clinical Judgement
  • Communication
  • Compassionate Care
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Ethics
  • EBP
  • Health Policy
  • Social Determinants of Health

The nine NONPF core competencies include:

  • Scientific Foundation
  • Leadership
  • Quality
  • Practice Inquiry
  • Technology and Information Literacy
  • Policy
  • Health Delivery System
  • Ethics
  • Independent

DeNisco (2023) states, “The role of clinical education for the nurse practitioner student includes completing an accredited graduate level education and passing a national certification examination. One must have acquired clinical knowledge skills preparing him or her to provide direct care to patients. Practice must build on the competencies of RNs by demonstrating greater depth and knowledge. Individuals must be educationally prepared to assume responsibility and accountability for health promotion and maintenance” (p.6). Five hundred clinical hours are required for a PMHNP student.

Quality and safety relate to the role of a nurse practitioner as it increases quality and reduces the risk of harm to patients. According to Lowery et al. (2016), “Nurse practitioners (NP) are uniquely positioned to meet the burgeoning healthcare needs in the United States as evidenced by decades of research demonstrating the safe, effective high quality of Np-delivered care” (p.436).

I will effectively integrate the core quality competency into my primary mental health nurse practitioner practice by displaying positivity, compassion, responsibility, and competency. Underneath my direct supervision and care, individuals will be ensured that their patient needs are met. Patients are satisfied when they perceive their care comes from well-qualified and competent staff.
