The Role of Followership in Leadership- Understanding the Interdependence and Key Qualities of Effective Followers

Followership refers to the role of supporters and team members who actively participate under the guidance of a leader (Baird & Benson, 2022). While leadership often gets more attention, effective followership is essential for organizational success. Followers who are engaged, think critically, and constructively support and challenge leaders enable better leadership and outcomes.

Leadership and followership are interconnected and interdependent (Northouse, 2018). Leaders rely on followers to carry out objectives, provide feedback, and collaborate. Meanwhile, followers rely on leaders for vision, direction, and support. Effective followers possess qualities like competence, courage, enthusiasm, and integrity. They take initiative, ask questions, give input, and hold leaders accountable. This complements leadership by ensuring leaders get diverse perspectives that improve decision-making. It also challenges leaders to clarify their vision and reconsider ineffective approaches. While leaders focus on the big picture and strategy, engaged followers manage critical details and operations. Through this partnership, they can accomplish shared goals.

In my healthcare roles, I’ve embraced an active followership approach. I diligently provide excellent patient care while also giving input to improve care processes and protocols. By asking leaders thoughtful questions, I help clarify departmental objectives and overcome obstacles to achieving our mission. I follow up to ensure issues impacting staff and patients are fully addressed. While loyally supporting department goals, I’ve also constructively challenged unrealistic expectations that could negatively impact care quality. My aim is to enable leadership success while advocating for the needs of patients and staff. With this collaborative and service-oriented followership style, I believe I can one day transition into an effective formal leadership role.

To further develop my followership, I strive to proactively contribute ideas, exercise courage in voicing concerns, and hold myself and leaders accountable. I can also nurture self-awareness to follow leaders whose ethics and vision I respect. Refining these followership capacities will allow me to maximize my leadership potential. The most effective leaders embrace leadership and followership as equally noble, symbiotic roles for organizational advancement.
