The Parable of the Prodigal Son
The Parable of the Prodigal Son is a story told by Jesus in Luke 15 about a father and his two sons. The younger son demanded his share of the inheritance, after which he went to a foreign country and lavishly spent it all. In the foreign country, he had nobody to look after him, so he fed them together with pigs. Finally, he realized his mistakes and decided to go back to his father and ask for forgiveness. The father was happy about the return of his lost son and celebrated. On the other hand, the eldest son was jealous and angry that his father had never celebrated him, yet he had never wronged him.
The Main Theme
The main theme portrayed is repentance. The younger son reveals what pure repentance should be like (MacArthur, 2016). He shamelessly demands his share of inheritance, and being an undisciplined young person, squanders it all. However, through his life, we see him become conscious of his sins and humbly asks for forgiveness.
The Principal Characters
This parable consists of three principal characters: the young son, the father, and the eldest son. The younger son is a demonstration of classic sinners. Through him, we learn that it is not too late to repent, and no sin can be forgiven. For this reason, he is the character I identify with the most. The father represents God’s patience, kindness, forgiveness, and endless love, a perfect example of divine grace (MacArthur, 2016). Lastly, is the eldest son, who represents fanatic Christians who are self-centered and see themselves as righteous people (Winters and Mathews, n.d.).
In conclusion, the parable of the prodigal son is a story told by Jesus to teach His audience how the kingdom of God works.
