The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT)
The International Centre for Reiki Training (ICRT) was started to offer Reiki training services. The organization is based in the US and also offers Reiki classes to students in foreign countries. It offers web pages and hundreds of articles that cover every area of Reiki practice. The Resources page has free practice and teaching materials, articles, and Reiki stories. The Reiki website has useful materials for learning, practicing, and teaching Reiki. The organization also promotes scientific awareness of Reiki by providing evidence-based peer-reviewed journals. They also provide guidance and direction for those wanting to be published. The organization’s website provides a list of hospitals and hospice clinics where Reiki sessions are offered. The ICRT Reiki Membership Association maintains a professional image for its members and assists members in creating a thriving Reiki practice.
It was interesting to learn that Reiki is not a ‘new-age’ practice and has little scientific backing. Reiki, which translates to ‘spiritual energy,’ originates from an old Japanese system developed in the 1900s. There were at least four styles of reiki healing in use in Japan during the early 1900s. Dr. Mikao Usui developed the modern conception of Reiki in 1922, which later became popular after the other forms of Reiki remained relatively unpopular or fell into disuse. After World War II events in Japan, Usui Reiki became the predominant form of Reiki. In the 1980s, the spread of Reiki into the Western Hemisphere led to various interpretations and modifications of the system.
Another interesting fact is that Reiki is not complicated and is not a gift bestowed to the few. In its practice, divine energy is channeled to the subject through the practitioner. Anyone can use Reiki energy. Any system that uses Reiki energy can be called Reiki, not just the systems that can be traced back to Dr. Usui Sensei.
