The Influence of Organizational Purpose and Mission

The Influence of Organizational Purpose and Mission

Introduction

The topic that stands out for me in the eBook is “The Influence of Organizational Purpose and Mission.” This topic is in chapter 4 of the eBook (The Competitive Environment). By locating the topic in this chapter, the author implies that an organization’s mission and subsequent internal stakeholder alignment bolster the organization’s competitive edge. According to Denisi and Griffin (2020), an organization’s purpose is the basic reason for its existence. For instance, businesses exist to make a profit, while schools exist to disseminate knowledge to students, and in some cases, facilitate research. On the other hand, the mission of an organization is a statement that explains what the organization intends to do to achieve its purpose (Denisi & Griffin, 2020). Among others, the mission statement clarifies unique characteristics and strengths that an organization will leverage to achieve its mission. In some cases, the mission captures the scope of an organization’s operations, such as products and markets.

The organizational purpose and mission concepts align with the strategic intent theory. Strategic intent theory refers to what an organization intends to become in the future, outlining the long-term aspirations for all organizational stakeholders (Mburu & Thuo, 2015). At the center of the strategic intent theory is foresight, which shapes tomorrow’s opportunities as defined by the management team (Mburu & Thuo, 2015). For instance, an opportunity for tomorrow can be enhancing customer benefit, and what the organization can do to achieve the benefit. Strategic intent helps organizations develop core competencies that will facilitate the achievement of future goals. For instance, Google’s mission is “To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” (Google, n.d.). This mission shows that the company’s purpose is to ensure access to information by all across the globe.

Personal Resonance

This topic is quite intriguing because it offers a deeper insight into the human desire for a sense of direction and meaning in whatever they do. Given that most people spend a significant part of their lives working, organizations need to attach meaning to people’s roles so that they can be motivated to do better. The mission of a company goes beyond the simplicity of words; it is a sense of direction that shapes people’s culture, values, and motivation to complete tasks.

Having worked in a few organizations, I realize I was most engaged at work when I connected with the mission and purpose of the enterprise. For instance, I once worked at a bank in the customer service department. The bank’s mission was “To bolster customer satisfaction and pursue mutually benefiting long-term relationships.” Executive managers at the bank would meet us regularly to explain the mission statement and make us understand the purpose, culture, and values of the bank. The constant communication from the leadership and clarity of the mission statement helped me understand my role, and I enjoyed implementing the necessary action steps to help the bank fulfill its goals. Most of the tasks at the customer service desk border around dealing with customer complaints and helping customers who have difficulties navigating the bank’s digital network systems. I drew great pleasure from helping customers at their most desperate moments, sometimes gladly working overtime even though there was no extra compensation for the overtime hours.

Application and Insights

Mion et al. (2023) refer to an organization’s mission and purpose as management tools that help organizations meet the entrepreneurial interests and make a positive social impact. Businesses are increasingly paying attention to their social impact because of the emergence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability concepts. Today, customers want to associate themselves with firms with a positive CSR impact (Mion et al., 2023). Therefore, even if a company satisfies customers with high-quality products and services, if it has a poor CSR reputation, it will be edged by businesses that embrace CSR. Apart from customers, employees also want their jobs to impact people, and that can only happen in an organization with a clear purpose.

For instance, IKEA’s mission is “To offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them” (IKEA, 2025). From this mission statement, it is clear that the company is not only interested in profit-making but also in producing affordable products so that even the economically disadvantaged members of society can afford the comfort of high-quality home products. As a way of aligning with this mission, employees will adopt strategies that help the company reduce production costs, such that the cost savings can be transferred to final consumers by offering them affordable products.

Recent Article Summary

Rahmatullah et al. (2022) delve into the organizational commitment variables that can bolster organizational performance. The authors aver that the human aspect is the most important variable that influences an organization’s performance. To that end, it is critical for the managerial team to shape the culture and values of its human resources to achieve its objectives. Shared organizational values make employees feel like family; hence, they are likely to collaborate in the pursuit of organizational objectives, both short-term and long-term. Rahmatullah et al. (2022) go further to affirm that everyone in the organization has a role to play in improving organizational performance. Among others, all employees, including the lower-level employees, can informally diagnose the issues a business faces that negatively impact its performance and make the necessary changes to bring about positive change.

A perfect example is Apple, where the top management has given all employees autonomy and freedom to work independently. The company’s mission is “To bring the best user experience to customers through innovative hardware, software, and services.” Every employee at the company understands the value of innovation; hence, they put effort toward ensuring the company offers final consumers their preferred user experiences by providing innovative ideas. Rahmatullah et al. (2022) aver that an organization’s culture influences individual behavior and the attitudes of an organization’s people; hence, their involvement in actualizing organizational objectives.

Conclusion

In summary, an organization’s purpose and mission go a long way to shape its culture. An effective mission and purpose should not only be concerned with the entrepreneurial aspect of a business, but also its social impact. Organizations whose mission is concerned with the public good attract the best talent pool and customers. With a clear purpose in place, employees diagnose and evaluate individual and collective performance, implementing necessary interventions to achieve the collective goals. This topic has helped me understand the need to attach a purpose to every project and communicate it clearly to the rest of the team members. Most importantly, a consensus should be reached before pursuing a goal. From a real-world perspective, people must have a purpose, an impactful desired end goal, in their day-to-day activities. Failure to have a purpose may lead to tedious and meaningless operations. Since the mission and purpose of a business are key organizational commitment variables, it is incumbent upon executive managers to explain expectations to their people for successful implementation.
