The Influence of Cultural Background on Handling Conflict

The Influence of Cultural Background on Handling Conflict

I come from a family whose culture respects elders, whether they are related to a person or not. In my culture, older adults are considered wise and deserving of respect. Hence, if a person finds that they are angry at or disagrees with someone older than them, such a person cannot confront the older person. Instead, the younger person will need to talk to a friend or a relative of the older person in question and tell them of their disgruntlement. The second older person will confront older adults about the conflict. When people in the same age group conflict and cannot come to a resolution, the wisdom and decisions of older adults are also applied. A younger person can never raise their voice or walk out on an older adult. Even when the older person is in the wrong, the younger person is expected to ask for forgiveness for upsetting the older adult (in the hopes that the older person will see their own fault on the matter). This is done because, in my culture, the words of an older person carry a lot of weight, and hence, it is the goal of the younger people to seek words of blessings from the elderly at all times.

The Bible teaches that gray hairs are to be respected (Proverbs 20:29). Jesus also taught that when two people conflict, they should resolve the matter before it goes to court (Mathew 5:23-24). Jesus also said that no one should offer a sacrifice with hatred for their brother in their heart. Above all, Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love one’s neighbors as one loves oneself (Mark 12:31). Notably, Kelly (2107) asserts that this means living in peace and loving each other. Christians should not judge others but live peacefully with their neighbors (1 Thessalonians 4:11).
