Academic

As a result of COVID-19, I have had to take all of my classes online. It is challenging to have to learn in this new system, but my professors have been very helpful and can answer any questions that I may have. My classes have not been cancelled, and my standardized tests were all administered as planned. The university adjusted its grading system to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic. I was able to complete all of my coursework on time. However, some students left my school’s academic programs due to COVID-19 and have had to transfer schools or take a hiatus from school. The challenges that I  have faced include sending messages that require an immediate response from professors, but you have to wait for their reply hours or days later since they are currently teaching multiple classes online. I also found it difficult to balance my social life, work, and academics. Despite these challenges, I persevered and completed all my coursework on time.

I have had to withdraw from some semesters due to financial difficulties, but I am still determined to get my degree, and Fisher College has been very helpful in working with me financially. The standardized tests could be delayed sometimes, which would impact the admission process. The major academic barrier is online learning, which I find very new and challenging at times. However, with guidance from my professors and hard work, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacle. The department has also been very understanding and accommodating of my situation.

I remember taking the tests and waiting for my score because there was a delay in getting the results back. I had to take it again, but thankfully Fisher College’s Admissions office is very understanding and worked with me through that process. The biggest academic impact that COVID-19 has had on me is the anxiety and stress of not knowing what will happen next. The pandemic has been a very difficult time for everyone, and it has been hard to stay positive and motivated. I have had to take some time off from school to focus on my mental health, but I am now in a better place and ready to finish my degree. Some close relatives have also passed away from COVID-19, which has been an additional emotional challenge.

Any other financial or professional barriers that you faced?: I  was able to maintain my job during the pandemic, but my hours were reduced. I also had to take a job outside of my field to make ends meet. As a team supervisor, I had to manage remotely, which was a new experience for me. Some of my team members were also working remotely, so it wasn’t easy to keep track of their work and ensure that they completed their tasks on time. The company reduced the salary of all its employees, and I also had to take a pay cut. Some people at my company lost their jobs because the company was downsizing. COVID-19 has impacted my finances. I have lost income because so many people are now working remotely, and my hours at work have been reduced. I also had to take a job outside of my field to make ends meet. The working hours for the second job have been very flexible, so I have been able to continue working. My family also lost income because my father had to cut pay, and my mother lost her job. My sister also had to leave college due to financial difficulties. I have been helping out as much as possible, but it has been difficult since we all live in different states. Another professional barrier was that I had to do odd jobs to make money and could not focus on my studies as much as I wanted. Despite this, I remained focused and completed all my coursework on time. For instance, there was a day when I had to wake up at four in the morning to deliver newspapers and then go to my full-time job. I was so exhausted that day that I could not focus on my coursework. In addition, I had a timed exam that day, and I could not study as much as I wanted. I left work early to take the exam, but I was so tired that I could not focus. As a result, I got a C on the exam. Despite these challenges, I have persevered and am determined to get my degree.

Personal

As a father to a newborn, I have had to take on additional responsibilities. My daughter was born during the pandemic, and as a result, I have had to balance work, school, and fatherhood. It has been challenging at times, but it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am grateful for my daughter and the lessons that I am learning as a father. COVID-19 has impacted my life in many ways, but it has not stopped me from achieving my goals. I believe that the challenges I have faced have made me stronger and more determined than ever to succeed. I managed to maintain above a GPA, and I am currently on track to graduate with my MBA.

I had to cancel my travel plans because of the pandemic. I was supposed to go on a trip with my family, but we decided to cancel it because of the risks associated with travel. I have also been helping out my family as much as possible. My father has been working from home, but my mother lost her job. My sister also had to leave college due to financial difficulties. I have been helping out as much as possible, but it has been difficult since we all live in different states.

I did not have any healthcare or volunteer experiences affected by the pandemic, but I did seek out other opportunities to help out. For instance, I volunteered to deliver meals to older adults who could not leave their homes. I also helped out at a food bank. These experiences have been very rewarding and have helped me feel like I am making a difference. I have also been trying to stay healthy and fit during the pandemic. I have been working out at home and going on runs. I have also been cooking more meals at home. It has been a great way to save money and eat healthier. Overall, the pandemic has impacted my life, but I have been trying to make the best of it. I am determined to get my degree, and Fisher College has been very helpful in working with me financially. Despite these challenges, I have persevered and am determined to get my degree.

Even though I had a hard time with some courses due to COVID, remote learning, and the responsibilities of being a father to a newborn (born during the pandemic), I continued courses and persevered and was still able to achieve above a 3.0 GPA.
