The Impact of Sociocultural Factors on Memory- Personal and Societal Influences
Health psychologists acknowledge that good health and one’s ability to cope with illness are majorly influenced by psychological factors like managing stress, emotions, and thoughts (Feldman, 2018). Sociocultural factors play an integral role in how individuals respond to stress. Shekriladze, Javakhishvili, and Chkhaidze (2021) claim that collectivists and individualists have varying coping methods. For instance, individualists are said to have a more problem-focused way of dealing with stress, whereas collectivists employ emotion-focused coping (Shekriladze, Javakhishvili & Chkhaidze, 2021). Other factors like income can also influence one’s psychological and behavioral health. Feldman (2018) cites that individuals in extreme poverty are sadder than those with higher incomes. Other factors that might impact one’s health include education, access to health care, and housing (Vakkai et al., 2020). My culture has had a major impact on my psychological development. I come from an individualistic culture where familial importance is not highly esteemed. Research shows that compared to individualistic cultures, interdependent or collectivistic cultures emphasize fulfilling obligations to other people and promoting harmony (Chiao, 2018). However, I am close to my family members, and in as much as individualism is valued in my culture, I have always had support from my parents whenever I have a problem. Moreover, this helps me share my feelings and emotions and find constructive ways of dealing with stress.
To further the values of multicultural diversity, inclusion, and equity in my life, I will continue to strike relationships with individuals from various cultures. This kind of exposure will help me become more culturally aware and competent. This competence will help me view other cultures with an open mind and a deeper understanding and help improve my skills of inclusivity and equity in my multicultural teams.
