The problem statement in this study is “exploring the impact of positive behavior interventions and supports on students with disabilities,” which highlights a critical issue. Due to the lack of learning on expected appropriate behaviors, students with disabilities (SWDs) fail to fit into the expected social norms, and this results in disruption and, in turn, exclusionary disciplinary actions (Anderson, 2020). Anderson’s (2020) argument defines the main problem that SWDs experience in school. Existing literature, such as the study by Morrison (2024), reviews the effects of exclusionary discipline practices like poor academics and poor social-emotional functioning (Morrison, 2024). This dissertation states that students with disabilities receive more disciplinary actions compared to their non-disabled counterparts, which creates a need for exploring the impact of behavior interventions on students with disabilities.

The topical area of interest in this dissertation is the application of PBIS to meet the behavioral needs of SWDs. PBIS is a structured approach that aims to increase the rate of positive behavior while decreasing exclusionary discipline, which research has indicated affects SWD. A meta-analysis showed that PBIS can result in better behavioral outcomes and thus may help offset the negative impact of exclusionary discipline (Salkind, 2010). This study is necessary as it aims to establish methods that can help address the behavioral issues of SWDs to improve their education.

The lack of teaching for teachers on appropriate student behavior plays a part in students with disabilities (SWDs) facing higher exclusionary discipline rates, which causes detrimental academic and socio-emotional ramifications (Dowling, 2024). This dissertation will seek to explain how PBIS can be effectively implemented to meet the needs of SWD and eliminate exclusionary disciplinary measures. From an applied focus, the goal of the present research is to compare the effects of the level of PBIS state recognition on behavioral data of SWDs in a large metropolitan area in Georgia. From a theoretical view, this study helps elaborate the systematic approaches to PBIS implementation to support the behavioral requirements of SWDs. In a practical sense, the conclusions will help educators and policymakers understand the need to modify PBIS approaches to address the behavioral issues of SWDs and make learning institutions more welcoming.

The problem addressed by this study is outlining the lack of teaching students with behavior challenges. Providing resources to assist readers with information about teaching and the resources available for children that require different disciplinary actions. Pointing out the differences in children with special needs that require different discipline accommodations from children without disabilities. It is important to evaluate the layout of information that is provided with details on what is being implemented for those particular children. The problem of my study will gain insight into the children with disabilities who receive more discipline accommodations than children without, allowing readers to know what is being used to ensure support for these different behaviors.
