Families have the most significant impacts on student behaviors, performance, and attitudes because they are the first teachers and individuals whom children interact with most before they start schooling. Additionally, students spend much time with their families apart from the few hours they spend in school. Therefore, families shape the learner’s attitude, performance, and behaviors. For example, concerning children’s learning behavior, the higher the family’s socioeconomic status, the lower the interest children have in learning and vice versa (Burden and David 263). In addition, the passion for learning is considerably lower in urban children than in rural kids. Therefore, it is high time families and parents learn that education success and process are positively impacted by conducive home learning opportunities, appropriate parenting styles, and parent-child relationships.
I have learned several things about dealing with families; first, teachers should understand the different families and their cultures. This will enable them to gather comprehensive information about the families and make meaning of them. As a result, they might better understand where to reach and engage families, whom to contact, the problems the families face, and the potential barriers to their engagement. Secondly, I have learned that I can effectively deal with families through the appropriate communication channels and engage them in their children’s education. In short, families can be helped by encouraging their education so that they learn the importance of being involved in their learners’ education. Burden and David (263) affirm that family engagement directly affects a kid’s learning success. Whenever families are part of their kid’s school life, learners get the home support they require to develop a lifelong passion and love for education. Families’ involvement in learning offers a vital opportunity for schools to improve their present school programs by bringing parents into the learning process. Therefore, promoting family involvement in education is more than a common pleasantry.
