The Impact of an Individuals Health Definition on Health Promotion

The Impact of an Individuals Health Definition on Health Promotion

One major influence on every aspect of human life, including morals, values, lifestyle, and beliefs, just to name a few, is culture. As such, it is no surprise that even when it comes to a person’s understanding and definition of health, it will also be influenced by their culture. For example, based on the culture I grew up in, health is defined as complete well-being in physical, mental, and social aspects of life. It is not only about illnesses; it also includes how social we are in our lives. In addition, we also look at how stressed one is or other mental health issues, including anxiety. Notably, one has to be actively involved in maintaining a physically fit body, being social, and protecting one’s mental health to stay healthy. On the other hand, someone raised in a different culture, such as one that practices alternative medicine, specifically with the concepts of chakras, has a different definition of health. Accordingly, they believe that a person’s chakra, which is their spiritual or psychic body, influences their physical body’s energy (Leadbeater, 2013). As such, they use chakras and terms like energy and energy imbalances when defining their overall health and well-being.

Lifespan development’s impact on an individual’s health definition is evident throughout life. At a young age, particularly during childhood, the definition of health is based on not being physically sick or sad and having someone to play with (Lazzara. n.d). However, this changes in teenage years and young adulthood as one starts looking at their health more. Socially, a person starts looking out for friends they consider cool and maybe even popular, meeting as many people as possible (Lazzara. n.d). Physical health is more about looking their best as they try to figure out what they like in fashion and style and also wanting to present themselves as the best in efforts to find their identity. As people get older, marry, raise children, and grow old, their definition of health is based on keeping their bodies healthy as they age. Aging comes with the deterioration of body processes. As such, physical health becomes crucial to keeping the body in its best state possible, which helps reduce the risk of developing illnesses like osteoarthritis. Notably, the same applies to mental health. Further, health in terms of social health also changes as older people start prioritizing those close to them, like family and close friends, as opposed to making their social circle big.
