The Future of Social Psychology
Society is not static but fluid. The current society is experiencing and will experience multiple social changes that significantly alter the social environment and impact individual and population behaviors. The current trends, such as continued globalization, widespread adoption of fast technologies, and new sexual orientations and identities, are expected to continue (Vogler, 2019). This means that trends will continually require the development of social psychology in various ways. I see the future of social psychology becoming complicated as social psychologists will have to study society and behavior from a broad spectrum, with a more varied population than before. For instance, demographical information on gender and sexuality, when studied as an aspect of social and individual behaviors, will need to be studied from varied identities in order to understand behaviors or their relationships to disease, health, intelligence, and other social outcomes. Due to all these, I believe that social psychology, in its push to study society and behavior from new sociocultural perspectives, is heading in a different direction.
The changing social environment has a significant impact on individuals’ social well-being and social welfare. However, applying sociocultural perspectives and social neuroscience can help improve social well-being or social welfare. The social perspective can help one recognize the role of cultural and social aspects of the population and the individual influence on behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes toward the self and others (Kirschner & Martin, 2010). This makes it easy to understand how overarching social phenomena can influence social well-being and welfare. On the other hand, neuroscience helps one understand the brain’s intuitive functions as a moral compass, understand emotions, and how such emotions develop and influence behavior (Beadle & Tranel, 2011). Therefore, integrating neuroscience into social psychology can help social psychologists better understand how brain processes and the social environment interact to influence the development of population and individual behaviors.
