The Future of Nursing-Leading Change, Advancing Health

The Future of Nursing-Leading Change, Advancing Health

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) 2010 report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” is a guiding framework for initiating necessary change in the nursing profession to meet the demands of the healthcare system. As per the report, the efficiency of the healthcare system can only be achieved and maintained if only the education and practice environment strengthen the nursing role by supporting the expansion of the scope of practice, the capacity of the nursing role, and continuous expertise development. Through its key messages and recommendations, the IOM’s 2010 report has greatly impacted the advanced practice nurse role. One major example of the impact of IOM’s 2010 report on the APRN role is its promotion of the role of the APRN as a leader and administrator.

Arguably, due to their practice context within the healthcare system, nurses have a better understanding of the needs, demands, and complexities of the healthcare system; however, they are excluded from leadership and on boards of directors (Sundean et al., 2019). A majority of them also feel unprepared for the leadership role within a complex healthcare system. The IOM relates the APRN to improved care quality, safety, and patient outcomes. Therefore, one key message is for nurses to continuously gain higher education to enable them to function as full partners with other physicians and improve their competence in governance. The IOM has provided guidelines on the redesign of nursing education to include the development of governance knowledge and competencies to help create efficient leaders from the nursing profession. The nursing education system is expected to prepare nurses who can collaborate within the practice settings, in boardrooms, and in research and be competent future leaders who can lead and improve health care and the entire healthcare system.
