The Future Directions of Emergency and Crisis Management

The United States Federal Emergency Management Agency faces a lot of strategic challenges in preparing and responding to emergency and crisis management. These challenges are likely to increase in the future. One of the challenges that are likely to be experienced in the future is an increased level of uncertainty and complexity in emergency management. The range of emergency and crisis situations that have to be managed is increasing constantly, especially with the changing weather patterns and social structures (Comfort, Waugh & Cigler, 2012). It may become harder to predict the occurrence of emergencies and effectively prepare or respond to them in the future. Another possible challenge is the impact of social media and networking that has come with the technology revolution. While social media can be used positively to manage emergencies, it also has created an avenue for a lot of inaccurate and false news, which could make it harder for emergency management organizations to communicate authentic information to the public or control public panic (Hughes & Palen, 2012). This is posing a challenge for emergency communication.

One policy change that would be helpful in controlling the increasing the uncertainties is allocation of more funds to research in preparation for disasters. There is a need for new research into crises and better preparation methods so that emergency management organizations can be in a better position to deal with crises if or when they occur (Comfort, Waugh & Cigler, 2012). For the complexities of social media, there needs to be policies controlling the kind of information people share online. Even though people have the right to freedom of speech, if the speech is harmful to emergency management efforts then the government can find ways to control it. For instance, purposely sharing false information that can cause harmful effects should be punishable by law.
