The Aging Process
The aging process is gradual and occurs in various forms, including biological, psychological, social, behavioral, chronological, and physiological. As one age, they are more likely to show a gradual decline in their mental and physical capacity; their predisposition to certain diseases is higher, resulting in death. However, such changes are not necessarily associated with one’s chronological age; as stated by Hillier and Barrow (2014), these changes are not exactly part of normal aging.
The elderly are likely to lose their sense of smell and taste as they age. This is considered normal, especially after the age of 70. According to Huntsberry-Lett (2022), 23 percent of individuals in the US aged 40 and above tend to experience some changes in their sense of taste and smell, but this percentage rises to over 31.7 percent among individuals who are 80 and above. This shows that it is not guaranteed for the elderly to lose their sense of smell and taste, but for most people, this loss is considered normal.
The loss of hearing and sight is also common among older individuals. It is common to have an older person ask one to repeat what they had said in a louder voice due to their inability to hear well. For most people, the inability to hear could cause them to withdraw from conversations. Some are forced to turn up the volume of things like the TV or radio to hear better, which could be considered disturbing to other people around them. The loss of sight could make it hard for older people to move around, increasing the chances of falling. These losses could affect one’s quality of life as they might get in the way of one’s relations with others, causing one to be depressed and withdrawn.
