The Absence of Intercultural Communication Competence in Christianity

The Absence of Intercultural Communication Competence in Christianity

There are several situations where Christians have had an ineffective/negative witness due to a lack of intercultural communication competence. For example, the bible verse Galatians 3:28 states that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Carroll & Prickett, 2008). This verse, to some extent, has been misinterpreted as referring to impartiality and equality in churches. As a result, it has brought a lot of ineffective and negative witnesses. In a biblical context, the verse focuses on spiritual matters such as salvation and one’s status as God’s child. Nonetheless, as stated above, many scholars and people have interpreted this verse as discussing women being disallowed or allowed in ministry.

Therefore, most churches have clanged to this verse because of intercultural communication that women should not be included in ministry, and some denominations do not allow women to preach. Others have merged the verse with first Timothy 9-15, saying women should be included in the ministry and not sidelined. Some have wrongly interpreted the verse and now persecute homosexuals or people belonging to the third sex because it is not considered a correct act in certain cultures (Hove, 1999). Such negative judgments of such persons display an absence of intercultural communication competence. Finally, many scholars have interpreted the verse and not allowed women to minister in churches because of the influence of modern equality for all rule. Since the verse says, “All are one in Christ,” the absence of intercultural communication competence has raised equality issues supporting more women ministers in churches, and no equality reference has led to no women ministers in other churches.
