Television Messages about Gender Roles
Gender and socialization are evidently interrelated in society. Gender is the most distinguishing aspect of society, biologically categorizing individuals as male or female. Accordingly, based on these categories, roles have been employed for each, initially dictating what roles individuals are expected to play in society (Hammond et al., 2015). Consistently, this characteristic of societies is also greatly spread in television programs/shows/films that people spend their leisure time watching; such shows include; “Bridgerton” and “Sistas.”
After watching the shows, I discovered gender and gender roles were depicted differently in the two shows. “Bridgerton” is a show set in 1813 – 1827. Consistently, the dressing and gender roles are set to fit those of that era. The gender roles are heavily portrayed in the show; the female characters are portrayed as possessions being showcased to suitable male characters to be wed. Throughout the lives of the female characters, they are taught and trained to be excellent wives. In contrast, the male characters are groomed to be the heads of their households, conducting all businesses and going to school, while the female characters are denied such privileges. Accordingly, these gender roles are influenced by society, illustrating different exploitations based on gender in terms of sexual, financial, or social exploitation.
After watching “Sistas,” the portrayal of gender roles is apparent. Unlike the other show, “Bridgerton,” this show portrays female characters in positions of power where they are independent and stable, unlike the men who are dependent on the women, with other unattractive qualities such as being abusive to the female characters. Accordingly, these two shows influence people’s views on life by how women are portrayed. Male characters are put in positions of power, being portrayed as superior and more powerful than female characters. However, these ideologies influence people’s views on life based on the information portrayed in the shows. Therefore, I agree with the author that television impacts everyone’s attitude and outlook on life as the information they perceive from the television influences their view on society and individuals in that society.
