Critical Infrastructure Mission Importance in Homeland Security
Critical infrastructure is the most important mission of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission of protecting and enhancing the security of the nation using critical infrastructure from terrorism. The critical infrastructures are the significant systems and assets whose losses would lead to serious consequences to the safety and security of the U.S. The Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) is among the critical infrastructure protected against acts of terrorism (Malik, 2004). HSIN is the trusted network o the homeland security mission, which enables the sharing of sensitive but classified information it is through this network that the information is received, submitted, and in timely discussions about the actions required.
Difficulties in Accomplishing Border Security Mission
Border security mission is the most difficult mission to accomplish because it involves protecting and sealing the U.S. borders against external attacks from external threats. The U.S. border is long, and sealing it is quite involving since it requires a lot of manpower and special security equipment. To secure the nation from external threats, it calls for a dedication of more than 240,000 workers in various job positions ranging from aviation and border security emergency response (Malik, 2004). The jobs also include cyber security specialists and chemical facility inspectors. Therefore, border security missions consume a lot of resources.
Department Of Homeland Security Efficiency in Transport Mission
Homeland security does well in the transport mission. The transport mission of the DHS is to protect transportation systems by ensuring that there is freedom of movement for people and commerce. The safety of the national transportation system is a critical element in the stability of the nation. The reason for protecting the national transportation system is to ensure that terrorists do not interfere with the movement of people and goods from one part of the nation to another. Thus, the protection helps in minimizing losses in case a security threat occurs.

One science-fiction technology that can be used to fight terrorism is artificial intelligence technology (AI). Artificial intelligence technology is a branch of computer science that entails building smart machines capable of performing human tasks that typically require human intelligence. Money laundering 8is one of the main activities of terrorists because they engage in this activity to get money to fund their activities (National Academy of Sciences, 2007). Therefore, one way of fighting the terrorists is to interfere with their money laundering activities. Artificial intelligence technology can be used to fight money laundering. Money laundering is the process of making huge amounts of money generated from criminal activities (Zimiles & Mueller, 2019). Consequently, to stop this, security agents and financial institutions should initiate the anti-money laundering process to limit the funding of criminal activities.
The anti-money laundering team employs AI technology to counter money laundering. AI has two main benefits to banks: AI technology increases the effectiveness and efficiency of financial crime investigations (Zimiles & Mueller, 2019). Secondly, it helps in the institution’s risk management because it accurately makes the risks clear to the managers. The computer scientist exposes the system to raw, uncategorized data. Through the interaction of the system with the data, the computer system identifies certain patterns that may signal money laundering. The AI suggests new ways to organize and analyze the data, which makes it difficult for criminals to complete their dealings.
The AI technology can also perform link analysis and draw inferences by identifying entities that are parties to suspect transactions (Zimiles & Mueller, 2019). The AI systems also point out novel activities by terrorists and criminals and also identify new behaviors that would alert the financial institutions to carry out some investigations. The potential side effect of AI technology is that criminals and terrorists will often develop more complex ways of money laundering that sidestep the AI trap.
