Ford Motor Company is an example of what good team management can achieve. Firstly, effective leadership is core to the success of any team. A team leader must make the hard decisions, correct followers, and create performance standards (Llopis, 2012). A leader must also understand team members personally and know what motivates them to work well with others. For instance, after revolutionizing the production line to manufacture en masse, Ford encouraged workers to specialize in what they were good at.
Another crucial factor that played a significant role in the success of the Ford Motor Company team is their reward and recognition system. Research shows respect and recognition boost employees’ morale (Llopis, 2012). Accordingly, this includes considering employees’ unique needs to work comfortably. Most employers think employees do not deserve recognition for their work, negatively impacting their performance. Ford Motors offered more time off and higher employee pay, leading to a relatively low turnover.
Team members’ competencies are also crucial for the overall success of a team. Recruiting competent staff requires collaboration between unit managers and HR to hire the right people (Pobiedina et al., 2013). It is worth noting that not all those who apply for a job are qualified to do it. Hence, the management must put a proper recruitment procedure to hire the right people. Ford Motor’s success is partly due to its engineers employed through a competitive process.
Also, coalescing around a common objective is vital to every team’s success. Team leaders are crucial in connecting employees with a company’s shared vision and goals. Leaders need to help team members set goals that align with the organizational objectives and help them achieve the goals (Nguyen, 2013). For instance, Ford Motor’s primary goal was to build effective and affordable vehicles for the average American worker. The company achieved the plan as the leader coalesced team members around this goal.
Building successful teams requires understanding, personal management, and effective leadership. A leader should coalesce team members around a common objective and help them achieve it. Besides, individual members’ competence is also a crucial consideration. Ford Motors’ success is attributable to these factors.
