People are voluntarily or involuntarily moving across national borders. Traditionally, human migration has been due to economic reasons and other human and natural calamities (Yousaf, 2018). In most cases, refugees and economic migrants can be easily integrated into existing populations or put in specific zones with specific care plans. However, the world is expected to experience unpredictable geopolitical shifts, economic restructuring, and technological and environmental changes (Uzan & Vöpel, 2022). Such changes will considerably impact global migration patterns with an eventual disruption of regional and global population patterns.
Consequently, the new populations will affect nursing practice at the micro, meso, and macro levels. However, the concern of nursing practice due to the unpredictable future human migration patterns is majorly on the micro-levels. Future nurses will have to provide care to individuals within groups without common socio-cultural and religious beliefs, a common ethnicity, people with varied views of nursing care, and social differences. Nurses will be required to influence and manage healthcare changes in such complex populations and inter-professional teams (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). To address this concern, the field of education for nursing will need to adopt a global outlook.
A global approach to nursing education will equip nurses with practical and technical knowledge and skills to adapt to the evolving global population. Nurses will be able to provide individualized care irrespective of the region of training and area of practice. A global approach to the design and implantation of nursing education will give nurses the power and social consciousness to influence the development of healthcare systems adaptable to diverse communities and a global population. Inter-professional collaborative practice can improve the efficiency of care services provision and access in diverse global populations due to improved sector coordination across healthcare systems. Inter-professional collaboration has proved to help develop a comprehensive healthcare system responsive to the needs of the population (Kholed et al., 2019).
