SWOT Analysis- Description of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit

SWOT Analysis- Description of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit

In its ideal definition, ‘W’ in SWOT stands for weaknesses. Weaknesses encompass all internal attributes and resources that work against any successful outcome. One weakness that the Cardiac Telemetry Unit suffers from is the high patient-to-nurse ratio that stands at 4:1 accordingly.  The high patient-to-nurse ratio is a significant cause of concern as several negative implications within the unit accompany it. One of the negative ramifications relates to the increased workload. Notably, multiple studies have shown that a heavy nursing workload negatively affects patient safety. The vast majority of patients admitted within the Cardiac Telemetry Unit I am attached to contract pressure ulcers, which is directly attributed to the high volume of patients in the unit that makes it challenging for nurses to monitor individual patients. Consequently, this has led to negative publicity regarding the entire hospital, with the consensus being that the facility fails to accord optimal care to patients.  Besides, the high workload placed on nurses within the unit is also a leading factor of low job satisfaction that inadvertently contributes significantly to high turnover rates within the unit (Pascale Carayon & Gurses, 2018).

One fundamental lesson I have learned from this topic is that SWOT analysis is an integral tool in aiding organizations to attain visibility on their prevailing status, thereby letting them comprehend as well as measure the overall business performance.  Additionally, SWOT analysis also helps organizations and their respective departments to attain visibility on their weaknesses and potential areas that they can improve. Consequently, such information usually goes a long way in aiding organizations in planning for and preventing future roadblocks, thereby ensuring the organization’s long-term growth. Ultimately, the other valuable lesson gained from this topic is that by leveraging its SWOT analysis, an organization may be able to formulate a strategic plan to achieve its desired objectives and become flexible to the changing market conditions (AlMarwani, 2020).
