Profile of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit

The central function of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit is to remotely monitor the vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate for patients suffering from cardiovascular-related conditions.  I am currently attached to a 20-bed adult telemetry unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4. According to the facility’s dashboard, the average length of stay within the unit is 3 days making it one of the best performing critical care units with one of the best key performing indicators in regards to the length of stay.  Besides, in terms of the skill mix in the unit, registered nurses with MSN constitute 2%, registered nurses with BSN constitute 70%, and patient care technicians 28%.

SWOT analysis is a practical and valuable tool that aids in understanding an organization’s or unit’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Therefore, the S in SWOT means strength. Subsequently, SWOT analysis may help the leadership of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit that I am attached to know what is being done right as well as to formulate a successful strategy for the future. Likewise, the tool may also reveal areas where the unit is not performing optimally (AlMarwani, 2020). However, for this discussion, the focus will be on the strength of the Cardiac Telemetry Unit.

A strength covers resources alongside the capacity that an organization or unit may use to effectively and efficiently realize its goals, mission, and objectives. One major strength that can be noted in the unit’s profile is the diverse skill mix.  Koopmans and Wagner (2018) affirm that a rich nurse skill mix is linked with optimal quality of care, higher safety alongside higher patient satisfaction rates. Notably, the diverse skill mix has been instrumental in reducing the unit’s length of stay, thereby saving the facility substantial costs that typically accompany a prolonged hospital stay.
