Supporting Developmentally Appropriate Practices
Part I: Narrative
The personal core value was that I believe an effective leader inspires and motivates other people to achieve a common goal. An effective leader possesses creativity, risk-taking, and innovation skills to succeed. The values obtained from the orphanage centre consistently demonstrate diligence, honesty, integrity, and transparency. The mission was to offer a secure, loving, and caring environment for kids irrespective of their status or disability, particularly for orphaned, abandoned, and vulnerable children. Developmentally appropriate practice is the routine that encourages each child’s optimal growth and education through strengths and play-founded strategies for joyful engaged learning (The 10 NAEYC Program Standards, n.d.).
The orphanage centre I chose follows DAP guidelines because it creates a caring community of learners by ensuring learners are taught to care for each other. Educators working at the child development centre meet the developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) guidelines because they recognize the numerous resources all early learners take to the learning centre as unique and important. The centre also cares for learners; they ensure all learners are safe. They also build on each kid’s strengths and care for them, not harming them in any aspect, whether cognitively, socially, or physically. Educators also implement design-learning environments to assist all kids in accomplishing their full potential in all growth areas and across all content zones (Freeman, Decker & Decker, 2017). The centre identifies and backs each child as a cherished member of the education centre. In addition, its practice is linguistically and culturally suitable for every learner. Lastly, the centre also provides assessments to learners to evaluate and assess their learning progress. Different assessment criteria are used for the assessment, such as class tests, exams, etc.
The one action how the DAP can be implemented is by knowing individual children and child development principles. The three strategies to implement the DAP are first acknowledging what the children say or do. Secondly, encouraging effort and persistence rather than just evaluating and praising whatever the kids have done. Thirdly, providing specific feedback instead of general comments to learners (Kinner, 2022).
Part II: A Table with Examples of How Various Guidelines Are Communicated
| Guidelines | Example | How to communicate |
| Teaching staff have training in pediatric first aid | Ask teachers to seek a pediatric first aid program. | Formal letter or staff meeting |
| Infants are placed on their backs to sleep.
|
Politely ask her to refer to a nursing book on the best way to place children while sleeping. | Departmental meeting |
| The program has policies regarding regular hand washing and routinely cleans and sanitizes all surfaces in the facility.
|
The centre director reminds everyone from teachers to students in the assembly or through created posters to maintain proper hygiene by following the hygiene policies like sanitizing and regular hand washing. | Assembly gathering |
| There is a clear plan for responding to illness, including deciding whether a child needs to go home and how families will be notified.
|
Remind the teachers and the nurse concerned to refer to the centre’s health guidelines on how to handle and make decisions in case of learner’s illnesses. | Staff meeting |
| Snacks and meals are nutritious, and food is prepared and stored safely.
|
Ask or remind teachers and cooks to store food safely and ensure learners eat nutritious meals by providing a balanced diet timetable for daily meals. | Staff meeting for both cooking staff and teachers. |

For this assignment, you will return to the resources from the centre you selected in Week 1 and your personal core values shared early in this course to write a response paper.
Supporting Developmentally Appropriate Practices
For this paper, complete the following:
Part I (this should be in narrative form)
Referencing your personal core value, and the values, vision, and mission you obtained from the center you selected in Week 1, address the following in detail:
Describe how the program does or does not meet DAP guidelines.
Provide one action and three strategies of how the DAP is/can be implemented.
Part II (this can be a continuation of the document created in Week 2 of the course)
According to NAEYC Standard 5Links to an external site., a program promotes the nutrition and health of children and protects children and staff from illness and injury. Children must be healthy and safe in order to learn and grow. Programs must be healthy and safe to support children’s healthy development. Teaching staff have training in pediatric first aid.
Infants are placed on their backs to sleep.
The program has policies regarding regular hand washing and routinely cleans and sanitizes all surfaces in the facility.
There is a clear plan for responding to illness, including how to decide whether a child needs to go home and how families will be notified.
Snacks and meals are nutritious, and food is prepared and stored safely.
