The pursuit of wellness and high-quality life has been an underpinning factor for the majority of community and individual healthcare interventions. With the elderly population on an upward trajectory, geriatric healthcare needs continue to increase. An area of geriatric wellness that is perhaps underexploited is physical therapy. Its significance in ensuring geriatric well-being is the underlying factor that makes me want to pursue it as a career. My life journey and the experiences therein have continuously shaped my career vision and tailored it toward physical therapy.

Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, I witnessed many people experience trauma and related injuries requiring physical therapy. While the majority of these injuries necessitated therapy, only a fraction managed to access quality care. This was attributed, in part, to the lack of physical therapy services. My experience as a licensed physical therapist assistant (LPTA) has also given me insight into how valuable physical therapy services are to the geriatric population. My eight years of experience in LPTA, volunteer experience in physical therapy, and restorative technician experience at a skilled nursing facility have equally added to my knowledge in this field and the care needs of patients requiring these services.

As a person who enjoys recreational activities with a high predisposition to trauma, such as soccer, snowboarding, and skiing, I believe that the space of physical therapists is way underexploited. For these reasons, I want to stand to be counted in this regard. Being a licensed therapist in four states, I believe my competency in this field will count toward providing the best care to my patients. I chose the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences because of its excellence in physical therapy. The university’s name continues to resonate in the physical therapists’ sphere, with it being linked with the best. I am prepared to begin my journey in physical therapy here.
