Statement of Intent as An Educator
As an educator, I intend to provide a quality learning experience for my students and ensure I am constantly developing skills to provide said experience. As a future special education teacher, you must go through specific processes. You can obtain a few licenses to become a certified teacher in Illinois. All prospective teachers first have to obtain a bachelor’s degree. To teach in Illinois, you must go through the entitlement process. Illinois offers three licenses to a prospective teacher: a Professional Educator License (PEL), Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), and a Substitute License. In Illinois, you must ensure you are enrolled in a state board-approved program. The State Board of Education has a website, the ISBE, which lists accredited programs. The Grand Canyon University is an accredited program on the ISBE website. Prospective teachers must submit to a federal and state background check. Once completing and passing the check, I can apply for my license. After submitting the background check, you have to pass three specific exams. The basic skills exam, the edTPA, and an appropriate content area exam (Teacher Certification Degrees 2020). Within this program, I have already submitted to a background check and will be able to gain my PEL certification.
One organization that can help me create a meaningful education experience for students is the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The CEC is an organization that “works to improve public policy affecting children and youth with disabilities…..the professionals who work with them, at all levels” ( CEC 2020). CEC has created professional development programs that cater to special education teachers. According to CEC policy, the CEC Professional Development Services Team creates learning opportunities for special education teachers (CEC 2020). They have committed themselves as an organization to supporting youth with disabilities and those in their programs. From teachers to parents, the CEC has developed programs in support. Many programs similar to CEC are available to support special education teachers in developing skills and expertise.
