Staffing Shortages

Staffing Shortages

Write a brief overview of the selected healthcare care problem or issue.

Inadequate staffing is a considerable problem in the healthcare setting, and this largely influences the quality of care provided. That is why the current issue stemming from the aging workforce, growing healthcare demand, lack of training programs, and high turnover is relevant to solve. These deficits are most especially in nursing and other specializations, and as evident, the supply and demand gap is only growing. They cause overcrowding of the existing staff, staff fatigue, and resultant poor quality of health services offered to patients.

Professional Relevance of the Topic

As staffing shortage adversely affects patient care, staff turnover, and financial stability, it remains a significant concern for healthcare leaders and healthcare policymakers as indicated by Poon et al. (2022). Measures to deal with these shortages contribute to the development of an adequate and skilled workforce to address the needs of the growing populace. The proper utilization of staffing assets is critical in providing quality care to patients and safeguarding healthcare employees’ welfare.

Professional Experience with the Topic

In my career so far as a healthcare administrator, I have seen how staffing shortages negatively impact not only the quality-of-service patients receive but also the morale of healthcare workers. Lack of adequate staffing makes healthcare workers stressed and burnt out hence higher turnover rates, and poor quality in the services offered. The need to address the issues arising from staffing shortages cannot be underestimated since they have an impact on the level of support being provided to workers as well as patients.

Identify peer-reviewed articles relevant to this healthcare issue or problem

Search Criteria and Databases Used

Having identified key themes in the research questions, I performed a databases search in PubMed, CINAHL, and ProQuest Central using terms such as “healthcare staffing shortages”, “nursing shortages”, “staff retention” and “workforce management in healthcare”. Moreover, I restricted the search results to peer-reviewed articles published within the last 5 years to ensure that the data is contemporary and relevant.

Assess the credibility and explain relevance of the information sources you find.

Peer-Reviewed

Only academic sources were used, more specifically only from peer-reviewed journals to fit the criteria of the study.

Recency

All articles must have been written within the previous five years to make sure the information provided is up to date.

Relevance

In the course of the review of each article, their relevance to staffing shortages in healthcare and their relation to practice was evaluated, taking into account their practical utility and research into the field of the workforce.

Annotated Bibliography

Li, M., Wang, W., Zhang, J., Zhao, R., Loban, K., Yang, H., & Mitchell, R. (2024). Organizational culture and turnover intention among primary care providers: a multilevel study in four large cities in China. Global Health Action/Global Health Action. Supplement, 17(1). https://doi.org/10.1080/16549716.2024.2346203

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between organizational culture and turnover intentions for primary care providers in four large cities in China. Li et al. (2024) also used a multilevel analysis where he stated that there is a positive correlation between culture supportiveness and innovation and a negative correlation between bureaucratic and rigid cultures and turnover intentions. In retaining primary care providers, organizational culture is found to be an important factor in this study.

This article is chosen because it best demonstrates the impact that organizational culture has on staffing retention in healthcare organizations. The implications stress the importance of promoting a health-promoting work climate in healthcare organizations to decrease staff turnover. According to this research, it is critical to emphasize cultural development as a solution to high turnover and staff scarcity in healthcare institutions.

Tang, J. H-C., & Hudson, P. (2019). Evidence-Based practice guideline: Nurse retention for nurse managers. Journal of Gerontological Nursing, 45(11), 11–19. https://doi.org/10.3928/00989134-20191011-03

This article will serve the interests of nurse managers by offering guidelines for increasing the retention of nurses based on empirical evidence. Tang and Hudson (2019) conducted a meta-analysis of existing studies to conceptualize what can be done to address the high turnover of the nursing workforce. These are maintaining a positive work culture, providing training and development, and acknowledging and rewarding staff.
The reason for including this article is that the author provides relevant current research and concrete suggestions for how nurse managers can organize staffing in the face of shortages. The results also suggest that maintaining a healthy organizational climate is crucial to retaining nurses. The study finds that adherence to these guidelines can help lower turnover levels and thus enhance staff retention and ultimately contribute to high-quality patient care. Implementing these best practices that are founded on strong empirical evidence would help healthcare organizations improve the satisfaction and loyalty of nurses – which is crucial due to staffing concerns.

Stanford, F. (2020). The importance of diversity and inclusion in the healthcare workforce. Journal of the National Medical Association, 112(3), 247–249. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7387183/

This article aims to identify the significance of diversity and inclusion in enhancing the healthcare staff population. According to Stanford (2020), workplace diversity and integration have benefits for staff and patients in healthcare organizations. To address the staffing shortages, according to the article, the policies of healthcare organizations should be diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

This article is included because it offers information on how implementing diversity and inclusion can reduce staffing problems in health care. The research evidence shows that structurally diverse teams are more creative and productive, having greater levels of employee engagement and defection. This study further argues that organizational diversity and inclusion policies serve ethical and social justice goals but also enhance employee turnover and organizational performance. By so doing, healthcare organizations will have ensured staff get better support and fair treatment that promotes productivity leading to better patient care.

Drennan, V. M., & Ross, F. (2019). Global Nurse Shortages—The Facts, the Impact and Action for Change. British Medical Bulletin, 130(1), 25–37. https://doi.org/10.1093/bmb/ldz014

The purpose of this article is to analyze the contemporary and future trends in the nurse shortage on the international level, its outcomes, as well as effective approaches. Drennan and Ross (2019) analyze the reasons behind the shortage including population aging, lack of training, and migration of nurses. The article also supports the argument to encourage more international cooperation and policy shifts to address these issues.

This article is included because it provides information on the global shortage of nurses and also outlines the possible solutions to this problem. Such findings call for enhanced expenditure on nursing education, a favorable working environment, and favorable nursing policies to enhance the nursing workforce. The study argues that global cooperation is required to address negative outcomes of nurse deficiencies and guarantee the long-term stability of healthcare systems. Learning about these trends and solutions will help healthcare leaders develop effective strategies that will help in dealing with staffing shortages in organizations.

Summarize what you have learned while developing an annotated bibliography.

Concerning creating an annotated bibliography, I realized the importance of the ability to search, evaluate, and summarize articles, which helped me deepen my knowledge of staffing shortages in healthcare. Some insights include promoting organizational culture, diversity and inclusion, and international collaboration. Adhering to best practices, promoting equal opportunity, and investing in nursing education can go a long way toward maintaining workforce stability and decreasing turnover, which can boost the quality of patient care.
