Staff Shortage and Registry Influx

Staff Shortage and Registry Influx

Most healthcare systems currently face many issues that need to be resolved effectively to avoid future adverse outcomes. These problems, if not managed well, may ultimately limit the reliability of patient safety and the overall quality of health care. As per Brashers et al. (2015), determining and recognizing the dynamics of the issues in a number of medical settings is critical in determining and implementing the best strategies for reacting to those variables. The shortage of nurses directly affects many health facilities in the U.S. This issue is projected to be more serious, considering that nurses will have to make up for this shortage by working longer hours.

Inform the staff of the two issues (from the topics provided) your organization is facing.

It is vital to analyze the issues of staff shortage, registry influx, temporary contracts, and part-time workers by examining how these issues can be addressed through long-term and short-term initiatives to implement sustainable change among workers in an ancillary service department at a large, 500+ bed hospital. As the nursing department manager, I have opted to get this to the employee’s attention and propose solutions for it. The subject has significantly affected my department, resulting in the hospital’s influx of registry, part-time, and temporary contract staff issues.

Describe the impact of these issues on your department.

Modern medical facilities have problems when it comes to meeting required nursing standards and implementing approaches that tackle critical areas of healthcare, general healthcare processes, and regulations. This affects the delivery of services in these hospitals. The shortage of nurses faced looks very different from the one encountered in the earlier days; nonetheless, certain factors contributing to the crisis have been the same but with significant differences in the number of modern women making career decisions, age gaps in the workforce, lack of support personnel and shifts in worldwide trend (Brashers et al. 2015). Also, significant changes in the environment of patient care lead to a reduction in the length of stay in the hospital, an increase in acute care and ambulatory care, development in residential care, and the development of qualified professionals and specialists.

The implications of nurse shortage and registry influx seasonal contract and part-time staff involve elevated burden among current health care providers, higher rates of medical mistakes, lower levels of quality of care, and higher cost of delivering departmental healthcare services. Because of the widespread nursing shortage, the current healthcare providers are forced to accommodate a higher percentage of patients, eventually raising their burden. The elevated tasks result in many consequences, like elevated levels of stress, extreme exhaustion, and heightened work absences (Brashers et al. 2015). In addition, excessive work is linked to increased rates of various disorders such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, drug abuse, and poor appetite. Secondly, nurse scarcity leads to an enhanced occurrence of medical mistakes, especially during medication prescribing and in different processes of care. Greater medical errors stem from factors like fatigue inhibiting nurses’ capacity to make sound decisions. Also, replacing the vacancies with part-time staff raises misdiagnosis cases, leading to many adverse outcomes, such as patient complications, decreased patient outcomes with the services offered by the health organization, and higher cost of healthcare due to long duration of stay in the hospital.

Describe how improved communication, collaboration, and teamwork can improve conditions in your department.

Better communication will enhance departmental efficiency by providing a new atmosphere that facilitates information sharing between health professionals. This might avoid and eliminate mistakes during different nursing procedures and on patient handover between shifts. Enhanced coordination and cooperation in multidisciplinary teams may enhance the quality of healthcare services delivered (O’Daniel, & Rosenstein, 2008). This is because teamwork helps people of different knowledge and skills come together, improving patient care within these teams.

In addition, better communication and collaboration could improve efficiency and foster harmonious cooperation by developing effective ways for conflict resolution within the unit. A good dispute-resolution process encourages cooperation and a feeling of belonging between all concerned health professionals. Improved communication may also boost morale among particular team members, leading to increased performance (O’Daniel, & Rosenstein, 2008). Benefits associated with enhanced teamwork and coordination are higher customer satisfaction and decreased healthcare costs, triggered by reduced medical mistakes and the influx of registry, temporary contracts, and part-time staff.

Identify at least two examples from the required or recommended readings of techniques found to foster inclusion and improve communication and collaboration.

Knowing that teamwork is valuable and vital brings us to a complicated question in behavioral and management sciences about how collaborative teams in an organization are formed and maintained. Collaborative practice drivers or determinants comprise the team’s content, procedures, and behaviors. Content involves the team’s vision and tactics to make the team pursue unity and purpose as a unified group while respecting its members’ diversity. These processes will make team activities more open, unbiased, inclusive, and less emotional and personal (D’Amouret al., 2005). Ultimately, behaviors are the activities and experiences that are often powered internally by team members. An empowered and productive team will have participants who respect and hold each other responsible, acknowledge their disparities and interdependence, and feel comfortable acting openly and transparently. Information, processes, and actions will foster socially cohesive teamwork and enhance team function.

Conclusion

Conclusively managers must recognize that workers’ behaviors are ingrained in organizations and rely on expectations, goals, and attitudes. This, therefore, influences emotional responses and abilities, which can be improved by experience (Catalano, 2015). Lastly, collective management can resolve nurse shortages by removing bureaucracy, which enhances team roles. The system requires the flexibility of the staff to work in teams managed by the senior staff. As a consultant, I believe this plan is the blueprint for addressing the nurse scarcity issue.
