Space Mining and Exploration-Facing a Pivotal Moment
The easiest steps for reading the article
One of the easiest steps for reading the article was reading as I wrote down the main points. The second step was reading as I looked up the words I did not understand because the article included technical terms that I was unfamiliar with. The third step is activating prior knowledge to interpret the arguments made by the author and determining whether the information provided in the article is accurate or not.
The most difficult steps in reading the article
One of the most difficult steps in reading the article was turning titles into questions. This step was hard because the headings were not straightforward, and understanding them required reading through the entire section under every heading. The second most difficult step was predicting the intended message in every section because of the choice of words used in the titles.
Concepts of the article that were a challenge to understand
The main concepts that were challenging to understand were the common heritage of mankind and Antarctica as the alternative approach. The common heritage of mankind was more challenging to grasp than Antarctica because it required connecting the theory to space and mining exploration to understand its relevance in discussing the changes that have occurred in space mining and exploration.
The main idea of the article
The article’s main idea is that the main challenge that investors in space mining and exploration face is an outdated global legal framework and the increased threat of space militarization. Currently, the only strong regulation is the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which prevents conflict between nations that have ventured into space mining and exploration and outlines procedures for scientific research, exploration, and exploitation of land (Skauge, 2020). Proper regulation of space mining and exploration is needed because conflicts centered on space and the resources it offers could occur.
