Songs, Chants, and Picture Books to Teach Mathematics to Young Children

Songs, Chants, and Picture Books to Teach Mathematics to Young Children

Cumulative songs and rhymes could be used to teach children about the world around them. Through reading these books, children learn about numbers, patterns, shapes, and basic operations (Van de Walle, 2018). Children learn to figure out what will come next when a growing pattern is revealed through a song or a story. This discussion reviews some songs, chants, and picture books used to teach children mathematics and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that could be used to teach them.

Five Little Ducks by Denise Fleming (K.CC.1)

This is a folk song with antriguing sound used to teach counting in children. Mother duck takes her brood out swimming every day and comes back in the evening with one fewer duckling. This is one tragic nursery rhyme used to teach children how to count.

Henry’s Map by David Elliot (K.CC.4c)

The Henry Map is a picture book children use to learn how to find their way to the previous number (Reid, 2019). The book uses a pig as a character who believes there is a place for everything and everything should stay there. This leads him to a map in the farmyard that he uses to find his way back home after a long day’s adventure.

Measuring Penny by Loreen Leedy (CC.K.MD.1)

The Measuring Penny teaches children to measure objects in multiple ways. Lisa chose to measure her dog, Penny. This book introduces children to basic measuring concepts: inches, yards, meters, cups, and gallons.

Each Orange Had 8 Slices by Jr. Giganti and Donald Crews. (K.CC.4)

The picture book introduces children to the world of multiplication. For example, when you have eight children, each taking 2 cups of porridge, how many cups should a mother prepare every morning? The book aims to increase the creativity and reasoning among children.

The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns (CC.K.G 2)

The book teaches children about shapes. The triangle is sick of having only three sides. He asks a shapeshifter to help. He wants to have four sides. The book is essential for introducing young children to shapes.
