Socrates and His Jurors
Socrates had good reasoning to arrive at this question. Today people are more concerned with working, making money, and paying their bills. Many people’s lives have become monotonous and schematic due to the daily routine that never changes. Some people work hard to have their things. Still, other people work tirelessly to get fame and recognition but do not care about their interior, for being people of integrity, respect, and responsible with their family and friends.
Socrates also mentioned that a lack of knowledge and ignorance harms the soul. Every day people want to look for fewer and fewer answers and try to avoid delving into new topics because many other things are more important, such as social status, influences, and power. “A clear sign that a person has an unhealthy soul is her exclusive pursuit of social status, wealth, power, and pleasure instead of the good of the soul.” (Vaughn, L, pp8).

Socrates said to his jurors, “Are you not ashamed that, while you take care to acquire as much wealth as possible, with honor and glory as well, yet you take no care or thought for understanding truth, or for the best possible state of your soul?” Do you agree with this attitude? Why or why not?
