Sociology Discussion
One technique that stood out during the evaluation was open-ended questions. Notably, this involves asking questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer, encouraging the client to elaborate. For example, at the onset of the conversation, the social worker asks the client how she feels regarding her progress with the program at 0:27 minutes (Van Breda, 2010a). This is an open-ended question that allows the client to exhaustively explain their feelings and thoughts: Sociology Discussion.
Another technique used is clarification, where the social worker ensures mutual understanding by summarizing or rephrasing. This is evident in the video clip between 0:48 and 0:58 minutes, where the social worker listens to the client and responds by nodding or rephrasing what the client says, which helps the client clarify, proving that the social worker is listening keenly (Van Breda, 2010a).
Moreover, the video on termination reveals that difficulties may arise during the termination session, even when the treatment is successful. Emotional attachment is one of those difficulties. The client may feel that they are suddenly going to be lonely or abandoned when the program is over. For example, between 0:33 and 0:35, the client says that she needs more stations because she is still used to doing some things with the social worker (Van Breda, 2010b).
Therefore, in the end, the client experiences feelings of anxiety, loss, or abandonment when the session ends. Such feelings are common and are more overwhelming if the client depended much on the social worker for support. Moreover, the client may fear that they will lose progress or will likely revert to the same problems they faced initially.
They may also not be sure that they can do things independently. These emotions require the social worker to acknowledge and process the client’s feelings while reinforcing their strengths and preparing them for continued success.
