Sociology Assignment
The Maria and Lizzie video epitomizes bad practices in healthcare practices. The statement “It is coming up Christmas, and that always makes me feel a little bit sad.” is one of the poor strategies employed by the social worker. To begin with, the statement demonstrates the therapist focuses on herself. She is giving attention to herself while having little regard for the client by projecting her feelings and mental state to the patient. Focusing on self is a non-therapeutic communication that signifies a lack of objectivity of the caregiver and poor commitment to the therapy process and patient healing. It also demonstrates a lack of self-awareness during the therapy process. Poor caregiver objectivity may prevent the establishment of a good rapport between the patients and the therapist. This may hinder communication processes between the patient and the caregivers, resulting in poor client satisfaction and the overall healing of the client (Malekzad et al., 2022).
The van Breda video demonstrates therapeutic communication in healthcare engagements. One therapeutic communication technique evident during the communication process is summarizing. Summarizing involves reviewing and highlighting the client’s main points to make appropriate conclusions (Mersha et al., 2023). Van Breda summarizes the client’s points upon her mentioning some of the factors contributing to her trauma. The client responded by nodding to the therapist as he summarized the major concepts and provided further insights into her complaints. Van Breda also guided the client into determining the next line of probing and subsequently allowed the client to provide more information on her suffering.
Summarizing is a therapeutic technique that allows therapists to comprehend what their clients are saying. Likewise, summarizing enables the client to settle into the counseling session and assures them that their therapist understands their suffering and has a clear memory of their narrations. This way, the technique promotes stronger patient-caregiver relationships, necessary for healing.
