Sociological Imagination- Falling in Love

When the notion of love comes to mind, what often comes to mind is Shakespeare’s story involving Romeo and Juliet and their tragic end. However, looking at her, she is one in love from a male perspective. It is essential to note that women’s behavioral features are often subtle and diverse, requiring plenty of time to gain insight and comprehend them and be in a position to notice the factors of attraction.

Firstly, she acted childlike. This rather strange behavior is seen in her often trying to look pretty when around her boyfriend. Also, her voice tended to soften when around him; her tone changed to be childlike, which almost sounded ridiculous because she was known to be one with a voice that never softened to such an extent. Seemingly, her style fell softer at first glance, which was essentially suitable for a toddler. Still, she created an image that showed her innocence as a child whenever she was next to him. It was love that made her behave in that way.

Besides, she was also free to tell her boyfriend anything without restraint. For example, at some point, she was in a group that involved several girls and young men with her boyfriend also in that group, which was before they began their relationship. During their conversation, she specifically addressed him rather than everyone else. She essentially devoted all her attention to him, and when he spoke, she gave him undivided attention, hanging on to every word he said. Also, the amusing thing is that she found it easy to laugh at lighthearted discourses from him, even though some of the things he spoke were not necessarily funny. Whenever he spoke of something serious, she exuded emotive behavior that was often empathetic. Also, anything that he said, even though it could be something she was unaware of, she perceived it with tremendous intrigue.

Furthermore, her eye contact was potent. The contact was often more than necessary. She also made sure to inquire more about the man. She asked many questions to gain an in-depth understanding of his personality. Also, another proof of her being smitten by the fellow was the fact that she was willing to open up to him, telling him more about herself, the female secrets, aspirations, emotions, and doubts.

It is vital to note that she comes from a conservative religious family. In this case, given that she was of an age where she could get married, religion played a key role in influencing her parents’ and her reaction to this issue of her falling in love. Also, her boyfriend was from a religious family, which strongly influenced how she fell in love with him. Religion played a significant role in that she was taught that people in love should treat each other in a way that adheres to the Biblical teachings. In a study, it was found that adolescents attending religious services with either or both parents “…are more likely to feel greater well-being while romantic partners who pray for their “significant others” experience greater relationship and commitment” (Mills, 2014). Her parents were often keen on ensuring their daughter was engaged to a religious person. In this case, therefore, it suffices to maintain that religion plays a significant role as she fell in love with a person whom her parents would approve of (Britannica, 2022). Lastly, this experience fits under the Structural-Functional Approach, whereby religion and the aspect of relations are a part of the society that serves a purpose (Yarnell et al., 2020). The fact that religion and relationships are intertwined implies that they fall under the influence of the Structural-Functional Approach.
