Social Work Needs

Social Work Needs

Statistics show that one out of five people in Stockton, California, lives below the extended poverty lines. Poverty in Stockton is attributed to the fact that many people have low-income jobs which can merely manage to pay off their bills. Basic needs such as food and shelters are not easily affordable to most people living in this city. Most residents depend on dollar stores, convenience stores and food pantries, which offer cheap food. Nonetheless, this issue can be solved by forming social groups and lobbying the city council to do more in the city (Reamer, 1993). Nonprofit organizations and religious groups could also be of great use to the people of this city.

The outskirts of Stockton are flooded with people living their life in supermarket carts. The number of homeless people continues to increase every sunrise, which has been a great social challenge to the Stockton community (Mauldin, 2020). There are only a few homeless shelters in Stockton than in other cities. This can be the start of the rehabilitation of street dwellers. With the help of the federal government, programs to build homeless shelters and homes could be started, creating a significant change for many people. Accordingly, Stockton would also be able to start transitional housing programs if the city council collaborates with local service agencies.

To cater to self-satisfaction, many jobless and idle people have engaged themselves in drug and substance abuse. Substance use is a source of other problems, such as increased crime rates in Stockton (Leiby, 1985). Notably, this is a large social problem in this city. Many substance abusers lack information. Therefore, local authorities can start by disseminating information to schools and the community. As a result, this will help create awareness and self-realization, especially for young people. The provision of alternatives, such as engaging in community work and other pro-social and youth development activities, can also be a great start in the new phase of Stockton.
