Social Cognitive Theory – Application in Research on the Mental Health Impact of Mass Shootings on Young Survivors
In the dynamic realm of nursing, the incorporation of teaching and counseling, collaboration, leadership, research, and personal philosophy plays important roles in modeling effective practice. Therefore, this paper discusses some of these vital aspects, showing how they improve and impact nursing care. Each section will be presented with specific examples from my practice to show the practicability of these components in my practice.
Section 1: Teaching and Counselling
In my expertise as a nurse, I focus on providing education and counseling on wound care; I make sure that the patient and their family are properly informed about how to maintain wound cleanliness in order to prevent further issues or developments. Some of the things I teach include describing the modes of dressing, insisting on aseptic washing techniques, and pointing to the signs of infection. In addition, I train the nursing staff on the most current wound care best practices in order to enhance their abilities and, ideally, give the patients the best treatment possible. That way, I work for patients, enhance staff knowledge and skills, and promote patients’ quality outcomes and cost-effective care concerning complications attributable to wound infections (Tobiano et al., 2022).
Section 2: Collaboration
Inter-disciplinary teamwork is an important aspect of my nursing practice, where I have to work in unison with other healthcare professionals. As a vivid participant in interdisciplinary conferences alongside physicians, surgeons, therapists, and social workers, I provide a nursing standpoint, promote patients’ needs, and participate in care planning. Everyone is involved in the process of decision-making, and the care plans are quite individualized to tackle issues affecting the whole person. I also track the follow-up of the action discussed and maintain consistent communication with patients and other caregivers in order to track progress and adapt the care plans as may be appropriate to patients’ care needs and keep on improving care quality and patients’ outcomes (Bendowska & Baum, 2023).
Section 3: Leadership
As a nurse, I have led the establishment and management of the wound care department at my healthcare facility. I created a skin champion committee of nurses from each unit to serve as resources and advocates for proper wound care. This approach has fostered accountability and continuous learning, with champions attending regular training sessions and sharing knowledge within their units. Additionally, I lead the medical ministry at my church, organizing community health fairs that promote wellness and disease prevention. In this role, I collaborate with local healthcare providers and community organizations to offer screenings, workshops, and healthcare resources, extending my nursing expertise to benefit the broader community (Stamps et al., 2020).
Section 4: Research
Research is relevant to my nursing practice, especially in the interpretation of statistical data in relation to the health of the community. From time to time, when conducting home visits, I analyze local data on diseases and read various epidemiological studies in order to define the most widespread diseases, including such ones as diabetes or hypertension, to consider them in my actions and educational programs. For instance, if the incidence of Diabetes was on the rise then I would embark on community education on nutrition, exercise and management of diabetes. Further, I employ this information to request the means and prevention services from the health care facilities (Kyobutungi et al., 2021). The use of evidence helps me perform well in the duties of health disparities and wellbeing of the population.
Section 5: Philosophy of Nursing
My personal philosophy of nursing is patient-centered care, research-based practice, and lifelong learning, motivated by the passion to enhance people’s lives. My educational background is in public administration, and thus, I have the relevant sense of the responsibility of leadership and communication, as well as an understanding of policy-making as it pertains to healthcare focus. This non-nursing degree has helped me to become a good role model to junior nurses, improve my communication and interpersonal skills when it comes to dealing with patients and work colleagues, and use advocacy skills to push for health reform, mainly on issues to do with access to healthcare and health disparities, which I incorporate in my nursing practice to deliver quality service to all clients in the community.
