Skills and Abilities
Human service providers play a major role in helping people meet their basic human needs and enhance their well-being. However, I am inclined to believe that there are problems in the world that, despite the best efforts of human service practitioners, will never be solved. Examples of these problems are poverty and hunger crisis, both of which are interrelated.
According to statistics from A Global Food Crisis: World Food Programme (n.d), in 2023, across 79 countries, 349 million people are faced with food insecurity, while over 900,000 people struggle to survive in famine-like circumstances. Poverty is the leading cause of food insecurity, resulting in hunger; however, climate changes also contribute to the hunger crisis(How Climate Change Affects the Food Crisis 2022). Even with the provision of aid and relief food from organizations like USAID, human service practitioners may never solve this problem even with the best effort. Firstly, most countries affected by poverty and hunger are 3rd world where corruption is deeply embedded in the governments and some common citizens. When this aid is donated, greedy government officials may decide to sell the food to the people or even pocket any other forms of donations that may have been given, which may cause the donors to cease donations. Secondly, the drastic climate change that humans have little to no control over also exacerbates the poverty and hunger crisis.
However, this would never stop me from addressing the issue. I believe that if measures were taken to reduce acts like corruption and measures like irrigation in drought seasons or better drainage system installation in cases of floods, the level of poverty would decline, and more people would have food security. However, this would only be possible with the help of the government, political leaders, and common citizens. As a human service practitioner, I will need good verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Secondly, I need to be culturally competent mainly because I will deal with people from different cultures. Lastly, I need to be excellent at advocacy because my greatest role will be advocating for the communities that cannot do it for themselves (List of Essential Skills and Traits for Social Workers 2021).
