Skill Development Plan
The three professional skills I possess are relationship-building, results-driven, and communication. Do you need help in your assignment?
Target Skill 1: Results-Driven
Strengths: I have a strong need for perfection or focus on the quality of whatever I do to attain the best results. |
Areas of Improvement: Whereas my focus is on the quality of work delivered, I often find it challenging to balance quality and urgency. When the job is needed urgently, I tend to fail to give my best since I cannot usually work well under time pressure. I am also relatively rigid, which means that when changes occur in the middle of a project I am working on, I am often thrown off balance. |
Desired outcome: Being results-oriented is a skill that is highly desirable in the workplace today because employees seek individuals who can finish their tasks while remaining flexible and responsive to the changes that might take place along the way. I desire that I will be able to work on my flexibility and time management to polish my skills in being results-driven. This would mean learning to embrace new skills, such as agility. |
Goal statement: My goal is to increase results-driven skills by becoming more flexible and a good time manager; these will help me become more resilient whenever I face challenges and improve my work efficiency. |
Target Skill 2: Relationship-building
Strengths: I possess admirable relationship-building skills. I have a robust support system and value friendships. This makes me highly dependable, and I know that I can also work with other people. |
I’m. improvement: Even though I have a robust support system, I find it difficult to ask others for help. I love being the backbone of a group and going out of my way to help others, but when I need help, I try to figure it all out on my own. |
Desired Outcome: Relationship building helps build a bridge to others and also helps others to build a bridge to me as an individual. It fosters confidence and increases the possibility of success. I desire to seek support whenever possible to connect better with people. |
Goal statement: I aim to increase my trust and connection with others by showing them I can also count on them for support. |
Target Skill 3: Communication
Strengths: I possess strong communication skills, which help me build strong relationships with others. I am also a good orator, which allows me to present my thoughts well in public. |
Areas of Improvement: Communication involves active listening, empathy, and emotional intelligence. I am poor at all of these things. Working with others requires vital emotional intelligence to get the right results. I am also usually afraid of criticism, making it hard to take negative feedback. |
Desired Outcome: My desired outcome is to grow my emotional intelligence skills and take feedback and criticism from others. |
Goal Statement: I aim to increase my emotional intelligence skills to improve team dynamics and become more open-minded. |
Previous Accomplishments
Result-oriented Skill
Challenge | The company has several projects that have not been completed for months, causing a heavy workload. |
Action | I proposed that teams sit down to discuss the projects’ goals and categorize them based on their urgency. |
Result | After three months, there was a reduction in workload by about 50 percent, and all projects had been done in a quality manner. |
Details | The employees complained of heavy workload due to unending projects. Most of them could not work well because the supervisors dumped files on their tables. I proposed a strategy to categorize the tasks in order of urgency and working as a team to complete each project, and within three months, the workload had lessened, and the work was excellent. |
Relationship Building Skills
Challenge | Employees in our department had made divisions based on race and often made stereotypical comments about others. |
Action | I suggested that diversity training be done every month and that individuals of diverse races should be grouped to complete tasks collaboratively. |
Results | After six months, there was a reduction in the stereotypes individuals had about each other, and people from diverse races could relate more respectfully. |
Details | Our company is highly diverse. However, some employees showed dissatisfaction in their relations with others due to the stereotypical comments regarding members of different races. I suggested diversity training that took place every month, and the group contact reduced individual stereotypes about others and helped them work collaboratively. |
Communication skills
Challenge | Most of my colleagues feared approaching our department manager because he appeared harsh and hostile, barring effective communication. |
Action | I suggested a weekly face-to-face meeting involving all department members, including the department manager, in which individuals were to express themselves freely. |
Results | At first, employees were reluctant to speak their minds, but after two weeks, everyone had loosened up. |
Details | The fear that employees in my department had for the department manager barred them from engaging in effective communication with him, and this caused some individuals with creative and innovative ideas to fail to bring them up for fear of being shut down. After the weekly face-to-face meetings began, there were improved, honest, and respectful conversations among employees, and the manager and individuals began to share their ideas and offer opinions for improvement freely. |
