The book of Mark 10:42-43 quotes Jesus saying, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you.” (Farstad, 2014). The verse continues, and Jesus says that whoever wants to be a great leader must be a servant and be ready to be a “slave of all” (Farstad, 2014). Essentially, this verse means that servant leaders should lead the people with love, love should be their inspiration, and they should serve the people with love. The love of servant leaders is a force that is so intense that it transforms lives, the lives of organizations, followers, and also the leader’s life.
Therefore, from the perspective of a servant leader, love works in the above verse on how leaders should serve their people or followers with agape love. Agape love is a sacrificial love or the love of God, which means leaders should often behave ethically at all times. From a follower’s perspective, those being led often follow and imitate their leader. Their primary aim is to serve those above them diligently, and for the model to work, a servant leader should love and have a genuine desire to assist others. Dierendonck & Patterson (2010) describe agape love as a love that is the cornerstone of the servant-follower relationship, nurturing a deep relationship between followers and leaders, a connection not just deep but very strong as it is God binding. The New Testament talks of the fatherly love of God for human beings, and humans, too, should reciprocate the love of God. Therefore, the unselfish love of others that servant leaders exhibit reciprocates God’s love for human beings.
