Servant Leadership
Servant leadership emphasizes giving back to the community or a specific institution. It is applicable in organizations that embrace democratic leadership styles (Eva et al., 2019). This is important because team members are allowed to participate in the decision-making process and set goals and objectives. Decentralization and focus on team members exemplify servant leadership. According to Lemoine et al. (2019), servant leadership is characterized by various principles such as listening, empathy, healing awareness, persuasion, stewardship, commitment, foresight, community building, and conceptualization.
Servant leaders should utilize active listening. Accordingly, this involves using appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication cues (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). Empathy entails understanding and sharing the feelings of team members. Healing involves promoting the physical and psychosocial well-being of team members (Lemoine et al., 2019). Self-awareness enables leaders to reflect on their abilities, thoughts, and actions and how they influence team members. Persuasion is key for the leader to influence team members without the use of coercion (Eva et al., 2019). Conceptualization enables the leader to think broadly about the challenges facing the organization and find solutions to these challenges. This principle enables leaders to influence team members based on the organization’s mission statements, core values, and vision.
According to Lemoine et al. (2019), foresight entails the analysis of past and present trends and determining their impact on future trends. This can utilize other aspects, such as critical thinking or intuition. Stewardship directs the leader to fulfill the needs of team members. Commitment entails shifting focus on team members and promoting their growth and development (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). Building community entails empowering team members individually and encouraging the team to develop comradeship.
Listening and self-awareness are the qualities that can support interprofessional communication in providing patient care. Active listening enables the members of the interprofessional teams to exchange ideas effectively. This involves proper turn-taking, avoiding disruptions, and noting both nonverbal and verbal communication cues (Lemoine et al., 2019). Active listening ensures that detailed and accurate information is conveyed from one healthcare provider to another. Accurate information promotes a better understanding of treatment plans, prescriptions, or medical procedures. Detailed and accurate information helps to avert the risk of medication errors that can jeopardize the well-being of the patient.
According to Gandolfi and Stone (2018), self-awareness enables healthcare providers to reflect on their abilities, thoughts, actions, and behaviors and how they affect patient care. Through self-awareness, a healthcare provider may identify an aspect of uncertainty in their actions or thoughts. This is important because it can promote interprofessional collaboration where healthcare providers seek clarification from each other. Accordingly, this communication ensures that the best clinical decisions and actions promoting the patient’s well-being are embraced.
