Describe the Fundamental Principles of Servant Leadership

Leadership is the ability to “influence others to understand and agree about what needs to be done in order to achieve the mission and objectives established by and for the organization and facilitate the individual and collective contributions of others to achieve the desired results” (Longest & Darr, 2014). Servant leadership is an approach to leadership with strong altruistic and ethical overtones that ask and require leaders to be attentive to the needs of their followers (Northhouse, 2004, p. 308). The leader is focused on empowering, uplifting, encouraging, and assisting others (the followers) in meeting organizational goals. The leader stays out of the limelight and allows their team to take credit. It creates job satisfaction while improving organizational productivity (Brewer, 2010). It facilitates and promotes individual and group growth, development, and confidence.

The fundamental servant leadership qualities are humility, empathy, courage, influence, self-awareness, respect, and democracy (Nurse Sophie Consulting LLC, n.d). These qualities/ characteristics of leadership make for great leaders in nursing practice. Humility is personified by choosing to give up control and serving followers while you lead. Empathy is when a leader acknowledges the weaknesses of followers and comes up with a mechanism for overcoming the challenges. Courage is demonstrated by strength, tenacity, and resilience to overcome obstacles. Influence is acquired when a leader leads by example, guiding those shown. Self-awareness is demonstrated by being aware of personal weaknesses as you teach and train others. Respect is when a leader respectfully shows and respects the followers’ opinions. Democracy is when a leader involves the followers in decision-making, and all agree to follow standard protocol to avoid negative consequences.

Respect sends the message that everyone’s job is important. All members of the team know and feel they are valuable. With this assurance as the bedrock, everyone focuses on doing their best work, helping each other, and making the work environment a happy, healthy, and thriving place. For instance, surgeons rely heavily on their nurses, assistants, and anesthetists in conducting procedures. The surgeon knows that without the team, they couldn’t do their job, and the team knows it too. Democracy, on the other hand, ensures the inclusion of the opinions of everyone involved in decision-making. Everyone is encouraged to be their best for the team. This promotes higher productivity because the whole group of professionals understands the goal and works together to achieve it.
